Devon's Hidden Gem: The Coastal Town of Dawlish

Kyra Lennon
Dawlish is a picturesque town on the south coast of England, just a short drive from Exeter. Because of its location, many international tourists pass right through it on their way to the bigger cities, but they are missing out on a unique experience of a traditional UK seaside town.

Gay's Creamery - one of Devon's most famous places
Gay's Creamery is a must visit place in Dawlish. You can pick up a traditional Devonshire cream tea, taste the delicious ice cream or simply browse around the gift shop. In the height of the summer season, the queues can get a little crazy so get in early and grab your treats while you can!

Coryton Cove - the "hidden" beach
Dawlish seafront can't really be missed from the town centre. It is less than a five minute walk from Gay's Creamery, so your ice cream probably won't even have time to melt before you get there! When you reach the seafront, turn right and keep going until you reach the end of the path. Most visitors usually park their sun-seeking behinds on the main beach, but in just a few extra steps you will find a spot that is far more secluded.

Dawlish Warren and The Boathouse - award winning beaches and a family pub
Dawlish Warren is a resort which is an extension of Dawlish. It is where many of the holiday parks are, but if you are staying a little outside of the area, it is a great place to visit on your day trip. You can walk back along the path from Coryton Cove to Dawlish Warren in around 20 minutes, taking in the beauty of the calming waves along the way.

You will probably have worked up an appetite by the time you get there, so it's a good thing the first thing you'll see is a pub! The Boathouse is a family friendly bar, catering to all levels of hunger. You can grab a quick bite or go for a full meal - but if you do, you must save room for one of their wonderful desserts!

I don't remember ever having been to Dawlish, although I love Devon. Coming from Dorset why wouldn't I :) Nothing compares to sitting by the front eating a real cream tea with fresh scones, and local jam and clotted cream.
