Dewey's Nine Lives

Heather Stottman
Dewey's Nine Lives is the second book featuring the kitty that was dumped in the drop slot at a library in Iowa. Dewey's original story is an amazing story about a kitty that brought a farming community together during the farm crisis, and who was a good friend to the librarian, Vicki. In Dewey's Nine Lives, Vicki Myron, the librarian who was Dewey's mom, tells us nine new kitty tales. Each tale is a short story either featuring Dewey or a cat whose tale was told to Vicki after the publication of the original Dewey book. Many people wrote to Vicki with their own amazing cat stories after reading the original Dewey book and Vicki features a few of them in this book. This book is stories about ordinary cats giving extraordinary love and support to their humans, which is why I love this book. All cat owners have their stories about why they love their babies so much. Any cat lover should enjoy this book. It lets us know that there are plenty of us crazy cat owners out there.

1. Dewey and Tobi-This story is about Yvonne and her kitty Tobi. Yvonne was a very shy girl who lived a normal, some would consider boring small town life. What she did have was an extraordinary bond with both Dewey and her own shy kitty Tobi.

2. Mr. Sir Bob Kittens-about a crazy cat whose owner Barbara has a lifetime of kitty love tales to tell.

3. Spooky-About a man, Bill, dealing with PTSD who finds support in the form of a kitty who just won't be kept down. This one is one of my favorites because it shows men can love cats too. And it hasn't been that long since I read an article about therapy cats who are helping soldiers with PTSD.

4. Tabitha, etc.,--About a resort full of cats!

5. Christmas Cat-about a kitten with an indomitable will to live who ended up being one special Christmas present. This is another one of my favorites because I too have a Christmas Kitty. And it is always touching to read about a soul that refuses to give up.

6. Cookie-about the special bond that happens when a cat chooses you.

7. Marshmallow-A story about how a girl's best friend is sometimes her cat.

8. Church Cat-we had a library cat so why not a story about a cat who got adopted by a church?

9. Dewey and Rusty-or how Vicki met her current husband and the two cats that played a pivotal in both their lives. This was probably my least favorite story. It seemed longer than the others since it didn't move as well as the other eight.

Most of the stories flowed well and are written well. Vicki works with a writer, Brett Witter, who makes sure that the stories are well written and read well. "Dewey and Rusty" seemed to drag a bit but the others read very well, and were very enjoyable reads.

All these stories are wonderful because they are true stories and were shared by people who identified with Dewey's original story. It shows us that cats play important roles in our lives and that it is okay to be the cat lady or a cat lover. It is nice to read good tales about how animals positively effect people's lives. I loved this book and I am glad I have added it to my library. This would be a great gift for the cat lover in your life.
