Dexter

The Only Serial Killer I'd Date

Cherrie Webb
I was turned on to Dexter by my hubby one Sunday evening when I didn't want to watch football. Now, I'm not one to praise serial killers, but the spin on this one intrigued me. A serial killer raised by a police officer who taught him how to kill without getting caught. Wow! Although, Michael C. Hall (Dexter) is a fantastic looking actor, his looks aren't the only reason I tuned in.

Dexter reminds me of my teen years. He is constantly confused in most social situations and tries hard to fit in and create some semblance of normalcy (whatever "normal" is supposed to be). He doesn't understand emotions and appears to be a participant observer in the world.

His "dark passenger" as he calls his urge to kill has been honed by his adopted father who recognised the trait early. We learn over the course of the first season that Dexter's mother met a gruesome, violent death. Dexter witnessed it and consequently altered by the experience. His father, noting that his son would end up on deathrow if something wasn't done to control his urge to kill, created a code for him to survive. This can be found at The Code of Harry
Rule number one:
Don't get caught

What Dexter learned from his father about life:
Killing innocents is NEVER allowed
Always take time and make sure you have the right person-EVIDENCE
Be extremely careful with the killing and more importantly the PREPARATION!
Remember: YOU control your urges to kill, they don't control you.
Fake emotion and normality to fit in.
never get caught!
When taking a psychology personality test, always answer the question with the opposite of what you feel

What Dexter learned from his father about death:
That it's real, and that it will happen to everyone. It's just a matter of how and why it happens.
Cops care a lot when other cops are killed.
People are sad when their loved ones die and they are full of grief, the one thing Dexter has trouble faking.

You can be certain that there will be a death in each episode, but the killing criminals is less focused. Over four seasons, We have watched Dexter evolve.

I won't give away the fourth season spoiler. I can barely contain myself while waiting on Dexter : Season Five!
