Dexter Season 1 Episode 3 'Popping Cherry' - TV Review

Dexter discusses how he has trouble at funerals because he doesn't understand all the grief. He is at the funeral for the officer who was recently killed. Doakes, still upset about the death of the fallen officer's wife, who he was having an affair with, vows to catch the crime boss who was in charge of the murderer.

After the funeral, Dexter goes over to Rita's to help plant a tree. While he is there one of her ex's acquaintances comes by to collect on some money he was owed. He ends up taking Rita's car as payment; Dexter is unsure of what to do and ends up just standing by throughout.

Another body is discovered from the Ice Truck Killer, positioned in the net at the Miami Blades ice rink.

Doakes drops by Guerrero's (the crime boss that the fallen officer had been investigating) church when his daughter is celebrating her confirmation. He starts to question Guerrero's daughter and Guerrero quickly intervenes and tells him he has crossed the line.

Deb doesn't believe the suspect LaGuerta identified is actually the Ice Truck Killer and she sees in the tape of him positioning the body at the rink that he was being instructed by someone else who can't be seen in the tape.

Dexter follows a recently released inmate who had killed someone as a juvenile. He sees him leading someone out to see an alligator and thinks he is trying to recreate the first kill he had; Dexter intervenes and prevents anything from happening.

Dexter catches his next victim, but before he injects him, the boy lets out that he was raped by his last victim. Dexter sees that the boy is very similar to himself in that he only was killing someone who deserved it. He tells the boy to keep in mind that not everyone deserves to die.

Then Dexter has a flashback to his first kill, a nurse who had been overdosing patients, including Dexter's adopted father. He was not as efficient at killing, but still got the job done.

The episode ends with Dexter delivering a car he has borrowed from impound to Rita for her to use for the time being.
