Dexter Season 4 Finale: 'The Getaway' Recap
Truths Come Out & Change Dex's World in Shocking Dexter Season 4 Finale
Spoilers ahead.
Dexter Season 4 Finale: The Chase
Dexter season 4, episode 12 begin where the last show ended. Arthur Miller, aka The Trinity Killer, was standing in the middle of Dexter's territory, Miami's homicide department. Arthur wants Dexter to disappear, saying he wasn't very good at vigilantism and should give it up.
Having all he could take, Dexter takes off after Arthur. His pursuit is interrupted by Quinn, who wants the blood analysis of Christine's, Quinn's girlfriend and Trinity's daughter, suicide. He finally antagonizes Dexter into punching him, something that he has been egging on all throughout season 4.
Dexter barely misses a beat catching up with Trinity. Which is surprising, considering he has his adoptive father's, Harry, ghost as a passenger. Rita also picks that moment to call, demanding they go on a honeymoon that weekend. As Dexter sideswipes a car and keeps going, Harry notes that the "messes keep piling up."
Dexter finally catches up with Arthur in a parking garage and gets his needle in the Trinity Killers neck. He discovers that Arthur has wiped out all of his bank accounts, which will make it look as if he made a getaway. Before Dexter can kill him, the guy he swiped has brought the police. They don't find Dexter's intended victim, but Dex loses his temper and ends up in jail.
Dexter Season 4 Finale: Laura Moser
Dexter's sister and homicide detective, Deborah, has figured out from Christine's postcards that the Trinity Killer struck in more cities than the had thought. Angel tells her to take the day off, as she had just witness a suicide, and he would handle the followup.
Instead of resting, Deb decides it is a great time to take one of her dad's, Harry, CIs to find another woman he cheated on her mom with. When they pull up tot he address, Deb realizes it is the same house that the Ice Truck Killer trapped her in. The CI tells her that the woman who used to live there was named Laura Moser. Deb recognized it as the same last name as Brian, the Ice Truck Killer.
Further investigation leads Deborah to discover that Dexter is also Laura's son and Brian's brother. Devastated, she goes to see Deputy Chief Matthews, who lets her know how Harry found Dexter in a pool of his mother's blood. He advises her to keep everything to herself.
Dexter Season 4 Finale: Unwanted Passenger
Dexter stews in lock-up, while Harry's ghost once again chastises him for having a family. Harry thinks they cloud Dexter's thoughts. It is here that Dex come to the revelation that his Dark Passenger is ruining his life and he doesn't want it to be a part of him anymore.
Due to an overcrowded jail, Dex is let go into Rita's custody. Rita wants to know what is behind his increasingly violent behavior and Dex finnaly tells her that sometimes a darkness creeps over him. Rita drops him off at his car. He hastily goes to Arthur's van, only to discover him gone, the drug having worn off. Dexter grabs the money and goes home to Rita.
Dexter tells Rita they should go on their honeymoon, in order to get her and baby Harrison out of Trinity's path. She doesn't want to go, but agrees after Dexter opens up a bit more. She lets him know that he is the most important person in their family's lives and she thinks he can conquer the darkness. Dexter tells her he wished he could be that man. Rita lets him know that he already is.
Dexter Season 4 Finale: A Killer Revealed
Meanwhile, back at the station, Miami homicide is realizing they have pinned the Trinity murders on the wrong guy. They realize there is a fourth victim in the pattern, a ten-year-old boy. Quinn calls Deb in to talk to the last kidnapped boy and gets a symbol out of him. It's the same one as the Four Walls builds. Excavation turns up another boy.
Dexter sees Aster and Cody off on a trip to Disney World with their grandparents. He then puts Rita and Harrison in a cab to the airport, promising to meet them later. With his family safe, he goes in search of his prey.
Dexter shows up at Trinity's house too late, he had already gone. He looks out the window and sees the police swarming. Quick thinking lands him inside a coffin in Trinities garage, where he is able to bluff being there to work the crime scene.
As Trinity's crying family is being led off, Dexter imagines they are Rita, Aster, Cody and baby Harrison. Harry says that is their future, because Dex would always need someone on his table. His family would still carry the weight of his deeds, even after he is caught and executed.
Deb pulls Dexter aside and lets Dexter know who his mother and brother are. Of course, Dexter already knows this and is just relieved that Deb hasn't figured out that he is a killer. He is also shocked when Deb tells him how much confidence he has given her and how he is the only constant good thing in her life. Dexter pondered how Rita had also said how important and good he was and considers that Harry may be wrong about him having to kill.
Dexter Season 4 Finale: The End
Dexter realizes Arthur will be in his Mustang takes off after him. When the Mustang breaks down, Dexter is there to slam the hood down on Arthur's head. Soon, Dexter has the Trinity Killer on his table and his blood on a slide. Arther decides that God has willed their fates, while Dex disagrees. A fitting framing hammer to the head and Dexter's inner beast is soothed.
As Dexter is dropping Arthur's bits and pieces off the side of his boat, he romantically (in a Natural Born Killers' fashion) wonders if Rita is also then looking at the moon. He decides to embrace his family and turn his back on his Dark Passenger.
At home, Dexter trips over some toys and stops himself from picking them up. He realizes that life doesn't have to be perfect, it just had to be lived. Checking his messages, he listens to one from Rita. She had forgotten her id and had to come back and get it, scheduling a later flight. Dexter calls her back, only to discover her phone and purse are there.
Then he hears Harrison cry.
Rushing into the bathroom, Dexter finds his son sitting in a pool of his dead mother's blood. Rita is in the bathtub, apparently the Trinity Killer's last victim. Dexter closes her eyes and picks up his son. "Born in blood," just like him. The cycle continues. Harry was right.

Post a CommentThank you for the article. I am a Dexter fan though I don't watch the show. I saw the commercials and wondered exactly what happened. Your article gave me the recap I needed to stay connected. I wish you the best of success with your work.
Be Blessed.
i like that show :)
Hey Ryan, I wouldn't say too much about the authors grammer considering spelled GRAMMAR wrong. Its AR not ER. HA HA HA!
Great episode! However, the writer of this article has absolutely terrible grammer.
Great episode!!! I like how this season was darker. It makes the series that much more interesting because it doesn't end with another fairytale ending like the others did (not that there was anything wrong with those). Looking forward to next season and what dexter does, what questions he will have to answer from the cops, what they will find out about him. I have a feeling some old things are going to turn up and dexter might be on the defensive like he was in season 2 which was gripping.
There were a couple of dull episodes towards the middle of this season but the last few were great, especially the finale!
