Episode 4.8: "Road Kill"

Dexter is kicking himself for killing an innocent man, instead of Trinity. And now the office has realized that Farrow has been missing since before his assistant was brought in, so now they are looking for him.

At the same time, Debra is starting to convince them of the existence of the Trinity Killer, based on the evidence of a smudge of ashes found at every crime scene. In pictures, the victims are shown pointing right at the smudge. They are going to get into Dexter's way.

""Kyle"" makes a visit to Arthur's house, only to witness him starting to lose his cool with family members over seemingly small details, and to find out he is heading for Tampa for a work site. Dexter manages to snag a trip to a meteorological convention, under the guise of learning how weather can impact evidence.

Dexter packs for his trip, making sure to bring his own hammer. Arthur is also packing. His hammer is no longer on the wall, and ashes have been emptied into a smaller container. ""Kyle"" begs a ride to accompany Arthur on his trip.

"Kyle" tries to have a heart-to-heart conversation with Arthur, but doesn't want to go into detail. Arthur is getting agitated. They pull off at a rest stop, and "Kyle" confides that he has killed a man. In a hunting accident. Arthur is way too excited about helping "Kyle" the next day. They go visit Arthur's childhood home, pushing past the Asian couple who lives there, despite their protests. Without realizing it, Arthur is confiding his entire birth as the Trinity Killer.

Arthur's sister fell through the glass shower door while he was watching her, and she bled to her death. His parents blamed him for her death, and his mother committed suicide. He claims that later his father died, but Dexter knows he actually killed his father. They go out to eat at a diner, but Dexter slips out to check in at the meteorological convention and have his picture taken with a famous meteorologist. Alibi is in tact. When he returns to the diner, Arthur is freaking out a local family by sharing his family drama.

The department has set up a DNA sweep of adults who fit the profile Debra has of the Trinity Killer. They are going to set up roadblocks under the guise of holiday drunk driving sweeps. Christine is pushing for more information, but Debra won't budge.

Debra also realizes that her scars are completely level. She runs to Masuka to find out how tall the person must have been who shot her. They realize that Trinity could not have been the killer, because there is no way someone over 6 feet tall could have shot at such an angle.

Rita realizes that she is getting too close to their neighbor.

Dexter sets up his hotel room to take care of Trinity immediately, because Arthur is obviously psyched to kill again. He finds Arthur at the build site, emptying the vial of his sister's ashes off the side of the building, while preparing to jump off the edge. Dexter ends up saving him, even though he still plans to kill him. On their way home, Arthur freaks when he sees a checkpoint and takes an alternate route.

Now Dexter is annoyed that he has killed an innocent man and saved a guilty one. He thinks of the adage "To err is human" and realizes that remorse is also a human emotion. Is he human after all?
