Dexter's 3rd Season Premiers on September 28

Dexter - a Misunderstood and Beloved Serial Killer

Storm
For those of us that have been waiting all year for the next season of Dexter, the wait will soon be over. September 28th is the big day for Showtime's premiere of the 3rd season. Frankly, I can't imagine what they will come up with next, but this season Jimmy Smits joins the cast to work closely with Dexter in the pursuit of yet another serial killer.

Dexter made it's own controversy on January 8th, 2008, when it was aired for the first time on Prime time CBS. Parent Television Council's president, Timothy F. Winter, went on record to protest this by declaring that Dexter had no place on Primetime Broadcast television and should remain a show the can be seen only by subscribing to Showtime, a premium cable channel.

Winter's objections were the usual of language, violence, and sex, but there was a special concern over the fact that Dexter encouraged the viewer to take a sympathetic look at a serial killer. The viewer applauds Dexter's grisely murders and his form of bloody vigilantism. The PTC feels that in an ever-increasing violent world, this show should have no public access that could mistakenly viewed by children.

That's okay; I will gladly pay for Showtime in order to see this show. While this show is an irreverent look at the system and how it operates, it is tremendously creative and I look forward to the new story line. Also new is the romance that Dexter's sister Debra has with a special somebody. There is no info at this time as to who will be playing that part.

It is important to mention here that in the original book Debra knows of Dexter's dark activities. During the time that the "Ice Truck Killer" is being killed by Dexter, Deb is a witness and she knows from then on of his secret hobby. I wonder if, in the script, Deb will find out about Dexter this season.

There are many differences in the script compared to the actual book. As usual it has to do with choosing what will work in a script and what won't. Adaptation is a tricky devil and it is interesting to see what they include from the original book and what they decide to leave out. It is also interesting to see where they depart from the original story to make the script work better.

The final bit of sneak peak info that I have is that this season Dexter actually kills someone that does not deserve it. As any devoted viewer can tell you, Dexter only kills those that have committed horrible crimes and deserve to die. It will be interesting to see how Dexter deals with his new moral quandary of killing someone that is innocent, because it is definitely outside Harry's, code. I have waited all summer for this show and I am dying with anticipation.
