Diabetes at Work: How Employers Can Make the Office More Diabetes Friendly

S. Ann
Most people don't think twice about their workplace being a friendly and healthy environment. However, when it comes to being diabetes-friendly your employer may miss the ball completely. With millions of people in America living with diabetes, is no question your company has more than a handful of employees who are diabetic. Here are a few things an employer can do to make the office more diabetes-friendly.

Workplace Giving

One way your employer can help make the office more diabetes-friendly is by offering a "Workplace Giving" program, according to Diabetes Society. Employers can set up accounts with diabetes charities and allow employees to deduct donations from their paychecks each month. Some employers even agree to match any gifts employees give. It's easy for your employer to set up the program and it can promote diabetes awareness and giving. In addition, your favorite diabetes charities will benefit greatly.

Awareness Programs

With millions of being going undiagnosed with diabetes each year, it's important to raise awareness on the benefits of early detection. According to Public Health Services, employers can hold annual diabetes screening days for employees or the public. Because there is a lack of education, awareness and concern in most communities a free annual diabetes screening day would provide an opportunity for all employees to be tested. Those employers who would like to take their program to the next level could choose to hold their sponsored screening day in a community location.

Menu Changes

Large employers who have cafeterias on their premises can make drastic changes in their menu offerings to promote diabetes health. New diabetes friendly meal options can be added or entire menus can be overhauled to offer a healthier overall eating plan for all employees. Sugar free dessert and drink options are often great additions to company vending machines, as well.

Overall, there are a multitude of things an employer can do to make a workplace more diabetes-friendly. While many employers are willing to make changes, they may need to be personally urged by employees to take action. Otherwise, making diabetes-friendly changes may not end up on their list of top priorities. Those who suffer with diabetes or who have loved ones who do should stand up to their employers and demand action be taken. The best way to do this is to be friendly and arrange a meeting with your boss. Be sure to come prepared, with specific requests in tow, to ensure they take you seriously.
