Overactive bladder can be an embarrassing problem. When I first started seeing symptoms of overactive bladder I didn't want to talk to anyone about it, especially my doctor. I finally realized that it was important to talk to my doctor about it, and I am glad I did. My doctor was able to easily treat my overactive bladder, and I don't have to be embarrassed about it anymore. Hopefully my story will help you with your diagnosis and treatment for overactive bladder.
Overactive bladder can have different symptoms for different people. I had frequent urination and I felt like I was always in the bathroom. I also had sudden, strong urges where I felt like I had to go immediately. This made long road trips completely out of the question. Some people experience incontinence or wake up several times during the night needing to use the bathroom.
I first brought up the problem with my family doctor, and she confirmed that it sounded like I had overactive bladder, but she referred me to an urogynecologist. When I got to the doctor he made me feel comfortable and explained that overactive bladder affects women of all ages, and that it is usually easily treatable.
My doctor did several tests to confirm that I had overactive bladder. First I had to do the usual pee in a cup to make sure I didn't have an infection or any other problems. Then there was a test where they placed sensors on my skin to check the nerve impulses in my bladder. Overall my appointment was quick and not too painful. While the doctor's appointment was a little uncomfortable, I was happy that I went. My overactive bladder could be treated.
My doctor prescribed me a medication, but he told me that there are several behavioral changes that I could make that would be a big help. He had me start doing pelvic floor exercises and kegel exercises, just like when you're pregnant. He also had me watch more carefully how much fluid I was getting. He told me to stay away from caffeine and alcohol. He also recommended trying to make scheduled bathroom trips, rather than just going anytime I had the urge.
Overall my overactive bladder has greatly improved. I am able to go for car trips without worrying. I feel normal again, without having to find the bathroom in every store I go into.
If you are suffering from what you think might be overactive bladder it is important to go to your doctor to get an accurate diagnosis. It is helpful if you keep a diary of how often you urinate and what fluids you are drinking.
Overactive bladder can feel embarrassing, but getting it taken care of is well worth it.
