Description:

Sophie Greenway, a hotel owner and restaurant reviewer, supports Bernice during a family crisis. During this time, Bernice's father confesses to a murder.

When Sophie is at Bernice's family home, she notices a picture resembling a man she once knew. The picture was of Bernice's Mom and Dad (Mary and John). She decides to look into the matter to find out what the connection is.

She talks with people who knew the man she also did and learns that his wife committed suicide but it was perceived to be a cover-up for a murder. In an attempt to find him, she uncovers several different aliases and several marriages.

It turns out the Bernice's father, in his travels as a salesman, would date and marry women all over. When he did so, he always used a different name.

Sophie had discovered bigamy. Though that was the tip of the iceberg, there would be several other marriages she would unearth. While this was happening, Cora found the blackmail money and she also had an attempt on her life.

Sophie talks with one of the wives and learns that the wife knew about the other wives. The funny thing is she didn't seem to mind. Sophie also had a talk with someone who knew the wife who allegedly committed suicide. Sophie discovered the truth in this matter and was able to absolve clear John of wrongdoing, in her own mind.

What initially had brought Sophie and Bernice together was a Meatloaf Competition. They taste several different meatloafs and a few of the recipes are in the book.

About the Author:

Ms. Hart lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has won the Minnesota Book Award for Best Mystery/Detective Fiction twice and the Lambda Book Award four times.

My Thoughts:

Ms. Hart has given each of her characters a background. The background is revealed to us with each page that is read. The complex characters and plot are woven together well.

This book is an enjoyable read that was difficult for me to put down. It is also one of a series of Sophie Greenway mysteries.

This has got to be one of the most clever titles in recent years. Between the title and your comments, I've just ordered it from Amazon! Thanks for the tip. David
