Diamond Christmas Gift = Separate Bank Accounts

How Does a Husband Who Shares His Weekly Pay Buy a Surprise Diamond Christmas Gift?

Michael Thompson
A diamond Christmas gift? Continually during the Christmas season, there are advertisements showing a husband giving his wife a diamond Christmas gift. She will gasp, tear up and give him a big hug.

Ther are many questions I have about diamond Christmas gifts, such as why would a woman (or a man, for that matter) care about jewelry? Personally, I couldn't tell the difference between a piece of cut glass and a fine diamond from South Africa, mined by workers who barely are paid enough to feed their families even during post-apartheid times, much less buy a diamond themselves.

But I digress. My main question regarding these TV commercials is: How is the husband able to "surprise" the spouse with a diamond Christmas gift purchase? The only way possible would seem to be that they have separate bank accounts. If he really loved her and trusted her, wouldn't they have a joint bank account? And if they are sharing their wages, wouldn't he have to use some of HER money to purchase the diamond Christmas gift for her?

The same goes for the wife who discovers a new car in the family's driveway, or any other sort of expensive Christmas gift.

Not necessarily, we have personal accounts and a shared one for expenses, mostly because we both worked and had them before we married:)

I have my sight on choicer fare...perhaps a kitten before the New Year.

    This would be a dilemma.

I agree! Great points! I wouldn't want jewelry or expensive gifts to begin with, but I have always pondered how a spouse would pull off such a surprise.
