If you know how to crochet, you may find it easier to crochet the top and bottom of the earrings and this will make the top chain lie flatter, as well. In this case, you will also need a crochet hook.
Crochet Chain
Make a slip knot on your hook. Crochet five chain stitches, then slide the loop off of the crochet hook and onto the knitting needle.
Knit Chain
Cast on one stitch. Knit 5 rows in garter (knit all rows) or stockinette (knit 1 row; purl 1 row) stitch.
Plain
Make an increase by casting on another stitch. Knit both stitches. Turn the work and cast on a third stitch. Knit the row. Continuing increasing and knitting each row in this way until there are 9 stitches on your needle. Knit the first two stitches, and then slip the first stitch over the second as if to bind off. Knit the rest of the row. Repeat this process until only one stitch remains on the row. Slide a pony bead onto the end of the yarn. Tie the yarn to hold it in place, and then add a bit of glue to the knot. The yarn can be cut off right below the knot once the glue dries. Repeat all instructions to create the second earring, using ruler to make sure the lengths match.
Beaded Knitting (pictured)
Slide 10 beads onto your yarn. Begin with the chain as explained above. Follow the plain instructions until you have five stitches on your needle. Knit the first stitch. Before knitting the second stitch, draw a bead up the yarn and slide it in front of the needle as you wrap it with yarn to create a stitch. When you draw the new yarn through, the bead should come with it as the old stitch is slid off the needle. Knit the next stitch, bead the stitch after that, and then knit the last stitch. Continue following the plain instructions until you have seven stitches on your needle. Bead every other stitch. Return to plain knitting instructions for the remainder of the earring, except when you have seven and five stitches on the needle again. On these rows, you will be adding beads on every other stitch as before. Repeat all to create second earring.
