First thing you should consider is replacing those diaper wipes with a moist washcloth when cleaning the diaper area when your baby has a rash. The washcloth is gentler on your baby's diaper rash than a wipe would be as there are no chemicals in your wet washcloth to burn baby's bottom. Just make sure to not scrub the bottom and rather gently pat and wipe.
The next thing you will want to do is let your baby's bottom "air dry". Let them go diaperless several times a day to help heal the diaper rash. Doing this allows baby's bottom to completely dry before putting on another diaper and allows for faster healing of their diaper rash.
A good diaper rash cream can be a great defense against diaper rash as well. Check out articles and advice online to help you make a decision on the right one for you and your baby. Be sure to apply the diaper rash cream on a clean and dry bottom several times a day for the best effectiveness.
One cure that I have heard of from other moms is to brown flour and apply it to your baby's bottom. Supposedly the browned flour helps the diaper rash heal quicker than just using a diaper rash cream. I have not personally tried this home remedy but I hear that it works wonders.
You can also purchase an oatmeal bath for your baby made by Aveeno to help your baby's bottom feel better when they have a rash. The bath also helps to cure the diaper rash faster. Simply mix a packet of the oatmeal bath into the running water as you are preparing baby's bath and let them soak. I tried this remedy last year when my baby had a rash and it seemed to help her diaper rash.
If you've tried all of the above remedies and your baby's diaper rash hasn't healed you may want to make an appointment with your baby's doctor. There is a possibility that the rash is a yeast rash rather than a typical diaper rash. If it is a yeast rash your doctor will likely prescribe or recommend Clotrimazole for your baby's bottom. This happened to my baby and after applying the Clotrimazole the diaper rash showed significant improvement in just a day and completely cleared in three. If you rather skip out on going to the doctor, clearly from your own decision, then you can try cider vinegar mixed into rinse water or plain yogurt.
If your baby's diaper rash is severe, prone to bleeding, or persistent it may be time to visit your baby's doctor. To help prevent diaper rash always change baby's diaper as soon as possible, try using a washcloth over diaper wipes, use a protective cream such as Vaseline or Aquaphor, and let your baby go diaperless at least once a day. Don't feel bad if your baby still gets a diaper rash or two as it is a common problem with all babies.
