Diapering Help from Dad

Ruth Speirs
Motherhood, what an adventure? Whether you're a mom of one or of many, boy or girl, there are certain things all parents can count on...sleepless nights, crying eyes, warm bottles and, oooh yes, stinky diapers. Motherhood leaves the faint of heart running for cover and the weak stomach running for the nearest toilet. Unfortunately, diapering fell to me many times because my husband was sent to Germany with the US Army. While he was gone, I was parenting two sons while pregnant with my third. To say it was an adventure is an understatement.

I suffered terribly with morning sickness. My second son, Willis, was only 5 months old when I found out I was pregnant with Daniel, so diapering later, unfortunately, was double duty. (no pun intended) Still, I awaited our move to Germany with excitement and worry. How would I get myself and 3 boys-- all under 5 years old, 2 still in diapers-- across to Germany to meet up with Dad without going insane? I thought and planned this out for months until the day finally came and family and friends dropped us at the airport.

I traveled with 2 car seats. Willis sat in one and Daniel in the other. Alan would watch one brother while I took the other to the bathroom on board the plane to change his diaper. I managed to get through to our flight change where there was to be a short lay over. I grabbed the boys and our belongings, ran to the nearest bathroom, washed them up in the sink, changed their clothes and ran back to the plane for boarding. "One more stop", I sighed to myself. I could last for 45 more minutes, I thought.

We finally reached our destination and who was waiting at the bottom of the stairs but my wonderful husband, pacing back and forth like a caged lion at the zoo. He hugged us all and it wasn't long until our suitcases were loaded in the truck and we were on our way to what would be our new home for the next 3 years.

I was so tired. He stepped right in to help out with the boys. I changed Willis's diaper and he took the baby to change him. I have never laughed so hard. He opened Daniel's diaper....and well....let's just say he NEEDED to be changed. All I heard was "WHOA!" He taped the diaper back up and ran down the hallway. I couldn't believe after traveling all this way to have our family together....who am I kidding...to actually have some help with parenting these boys, he ran out of the room at the FIRST dirty diaper. I just couldn't believe it.

I shook my head while I finished changing Willis. Then I turned my attention to Daniel. Before I could reach him, Al had returned wearing a GAS MASK. I howled at the sight of him holding that baby in the air and the look on poor Daniel's face was just priceless.
