Diary of a Wimpy Kid Birthday Party Theme

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books by Jeff Kinney are incredibly popular with children in elementary and middle school. As a school librarian I see these books fly off the shelves (or out of the book drop as they rarely even make to the shelves!) on a consistent basis. A Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party would be great fun for both girls and boys of a variety of ages. Planning a Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party doesn't have to cost of lot of money or take too much planning. Follow this guide for planning and throwing the perfect Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party.

The Cake. A bakery would be able to make a birthday cake with the image of any of the four Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. Just take in one of the books and a bakery would be happy to create a cake from it. Or, print out a picture of one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and get the image created directly onto the cake much like photo cakes. If you want to make the cake yourself, but maybe have limited cake decorating skills, try this. Just ice a sheet cake with white icing. Then using a piping bag or zip top bag with the corner cut, pipe the Wimpy Kid himself onto the cake. Greg Heffley's stick figure-self isn't exactly complicated to draw. This simple Wimpy Kid birthday cake is perfect for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party.

The Games. A well known theme in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid saga is the cheese square on the blacktop that has been there for ages, giving Greg "The Cheese Touch." A great game for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party would be to hide pieces of wrapped single cheese slices around the house or outside of the house. Have the party-goers search for the cheese slices much like they would Easter Eggs. The one who finds the most slices of cheese now has "The Cheese Touch." Instead of "The Cheese Touch" being a bad thing, however, the title-bearer will be declared the winner of the game.

Another game that could be played at a Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party is "Zow Wee Mama." Greg's friend Fregley creates the cartoon strip "Zow Wee Mama" for the school newspaper. Create little comic strip storyboards for the guests. Fill in only the first square with the same thing on each paper. Then have the guests create their own comic strip. Each guest then votes anonymously on which comic strip is the best. The winner gets a prize.

The Favors. Favors for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party can be super simple or a little more elaborate. If you are having a small party with only a few guests, you could always purchase copies of the actual Diary of a Wimpy Kid books ($6.99 in paperback) to give out as favors. If that is too expensive, or if you think all of the guests will already own the book, take a simpler route. Guests could receive actual journals so they could record their own thoughts just like Greg Heffley.

The Food. The food for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party really doesn't have to be all that special to fit the theme. Greg Heffley, the Wimpy Kid himself, is a pretty typical tween so pretty typical tween party food will be perfect for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid birthday party.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books make a great theme for a tween birthday party. Use these tips to create a fun and memorable Diary of a Wimpy Kid day for your birthday boy or girl.
