On Saturday September 8, 2007 the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented the 59th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards. This ceremony which honors excellence in technical disciplines and behind-the-scenes work, was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and hosted by comedian Carlos Mencia.

Four acting awards were handed out at his ceremony which is the precursor to Sunday's big event, the Primetime Emmy Awards. Stanley Tucci won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on Monk. Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series went to the usually funny man John Goodman for a role on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. In the Outstanding Actress categories Elaine Stritch and Leslie Caron won for Comedy (30 Rock) and Drama (Law and Order: Special Victims Unit), respectively.

One winner that wasn't a surprise at all was the winner in the Best Nonfiction Series category, Planet Earth from The Discovery Channel. This series was one of the most breathtaking feats ever imagined in television history and left viewers around the world in complete awe.

But the night's big surprise winner was Justin Timberlake's song that became a hit on Saturday Night Live, "Dick in a Box." The six composers and lyricists won Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. The SNL skit was an instant hit when it was broadcast during a week Justin Timberlake hosted. But it's audience grew by tens of millions when viewers began sharing the skit on video sharing websites such as Utube.

On Sunday September 16th the Primetime Emmys will be held at the Shrine Auditorium. Who knows who the surprise winners will be? Will The Sopranos manage to take home another trophy? Will Ugly Betty be beautifully comedic enough to beat cult favorite The Office? We can only wait and see.
