While often praised for the 'best vocals of the night' and 'the one to beat', and despite hoards of young fans, the junior Archuleta was narrowly edged out by the humble rocker, 25 year old David Cook.
With all time Idol record breaking numbers, Cook stole the show with 56% of the 98 million plus votes compared to Archuleta's 44%.
But is Dad to blame? After whittling down to the top three contenders, it was reported that Jeff Archuleta had been banned from the backstage area of the American Idol set.
He had been accused of meddling, badgering other contestants and changing the lyrics of one of David's songs even after producers warned him that could not be done. It was his latter action that promptly initiated a meeting with the Idol attorneys, where he was told that he was no longer allowed to sit in on David's rehearsals.
Reportedly, his actions may have cost the show money and may have cast a dark shadow over his son. He may have even caused enough damage to point voters' fingers to David Cook's numbers instead.
The family responded to the media by stating that Mr. Archuleta was not an overbearing stage father, and that this news would not harm young David because he was being protected from the press.
David himself has spoken out in defense of his father stating that "He's given me a lot of good advice and helped me from making any dumb decisions," Archuleta continued. "He understands more than anyone what I want in music, and I've felt really blessed to have someone like that."
Apparently, this was not the first time Jeff Archuleta has been banned from a show. TMZ.com reported that when David performed on Star Search several years ago, he was banned from that set as well. He reportedly went as far as tormenting his son's rival by coercing her to drink milk before her performance in an attempt to ruin her voice.
While other sources have attempted to debunk these rumors, nonetheless, they are out there and opinions have been formed.
Call him persistent, call him caring or call him the stage dad from hell. A star will rise regardless. David Archuleta is a young talented lad with a promising career in his future. Landing a spot in the shows finale has all but guaranteed him a recording contract and we will definitely be hearing more from him in the years to come.
