Did Dr. Phil Have an "Ah Ha" Moment on the Dr. Phil/Ted Williams Interview, Part 3?

Does Dr. Phil Know What He is Doing?

Memmay Moore
Every thing fell apart and so quickly. Cinderella boy, Ted Williams let us and Dr. Phil down. How could he disappoint us so soon? He said he had found Jesus and promised he was ready to change his evil ways.

He would stop the drinking and drugging, take care of his family, cease his stealing and getting arrested, and pay his taxes. He promised Dr, Phil and we heard him.

He agreed to show up clean and sober and on time for work and TV shows... All this, after living on the streets for 10 years, and some interviews with Dr. Phil.

Hadn't Dr. Phil, "this relationship needs a hero" McGraw, pointed him in the right direction? He even flew all Ted's relatives to Los Angeles for an all expense paid family reunion/intervention holiday.

And that family...It wasn't very nice of them to lie about the vodka on national TV. So what about those mini- bars in their rooms. Dr. Phil warned them not to let Ted near any alcohol, and they gave him their word.

Mr. Williams' 87 year old 'Mommy' was the only family member with the good sense to stay away from this televised mess. She passed on the intervention, hugged Ted, wished him well, and went on her way.

Parts 1 and 2 of the Phil and Ted show had gone fairly well with the frail wild-eyed, confused Ted trying his best to suck up to portly Dr. Phil. Ted's female relatives, looking real nice with professional hairstyles and makeup, told Dr. Phil what he wanted to hear.

But as in all TV dramas, things were not what they seemed. The Part 3 Interview did not go well at all. The family reunion/intervention which seemed quite civilized on the Part 2 show, had turned into a disaster. It was time to fess up.

It seems back in the very nice hotel rooms that dr.phil.com had paid for, the family forgot Dr Phil's warning about the alcohol. They took advantage of the mini-bars and they partied, Ted included. The drinking got ugly, fights broke out and the police were called.

During the interview, a hung over, sick, angry Mr. Williams said that he had had enough of everything. Dr. Phil {this isn't my first rodeo) McGraw seemed uncomfortable. Ted would not shut up. Maybe sentencing Mr. Williams to 30 days of AA meetings and going to the dentist to get his teeth fixed for free, was not a good idea.

Perhaps this ungrateful, pesky little addict needs in-patient rehab treatment after all. Dr. Phil's doctor buddy, has just the place on the Gulf of Mexico in Texas.

Come hell or high water, Dr.Phil is not going to let Ted escape easily. He certainly can get more mileage and programs out of Ted Williams' sorry behind.

As for poor Ted, he said he just needed time to think things over. Everything has been too much, too soon. He has no idea what he wants to do. All he wants now is to see his girlfriend and kids back in Ohio. Frequently using the F word to emphasize his points, he said maybe he would go into treatment later. Dr Phil said go now, Ted said no.

Then it happened. Ted said something about talking with his advisors first, Dr. Phil's eyebrows went up. This was not good. Phil was scared. Was he losing Ted to someone else?

He then had an idea. He reminded Ted that he had no money yet. He was broke. Dr Phil would pay for Ted to go to Ohio and see the girlfriend and kids, provided he was accompanied by the rehab doctor, who would then whisk him away to rehab in Texas. And a weary Ted said yes.

One would only hope that the good doctor Phil would have an Oprah Winfrey "Ah Ha" moment when suddenly he would remember that Mr. Williams is a very sick addict who has been living on the streets. He was set up to fail publicly on the Dr. Phil Show.

Perhaps Dr. Phil missed his addiction class in psychology school. Maybe he doesn't watch enough Intervention on A&E.

To refresh his memory, here are a few facts. Addicts are very sick, unreliable people. They may need long term medical and psychological care to get better. They have to want to get better. They need structure and spirituality in their life.

They will lie, steal, cheat and manipulate those who care about them. They ruin their lives and hurt those who try to help them. They will do anything to get drugs or alcohol, but nothing to help themselves.

They use people and can be the nicest, meanest people you will ever meet. They are dishonest, smart, selfish, dangerous, obsessive, and afraid. They are precious and destructive to the people who care about them. Their recovery is difficult and they may relapse. Sobriety is one day at a time.

Ted William has a fatal disease. He is sick mentally and physically. Unless he wants to get well and gets the right treatment, he will die. The last thing he needs is his struggle exploited on the Dr. Phil show. This may not end well.

WOW ! Your are now equivalent (probably lower) in quality than JERRY SPRINGER SHOW !

Dr. Phil needs some rehab himself, it seems. Fantastic work on this one!

Yikes! Dr. Phil should know better. I'm not much of a fan because of the exploitative nature of acting like a 1 hour t.v. show will "cure" these long-term problems. Very good article.

You composed this well with your research. TV should not be about pleasing the audience, but it has certainly come to that in this case.

I would hope that Ted's advisors would keep him away from this man "Dr. Phil" and his grand standing and that they would get Ted the help he needs. But I think from what I have seen it is all a game to glean ratings for all concerned. No one really cares about Ted himself, just what he can provide to their shows.
