Thankfully there wasn't though, as always some things had changed. There was a roughly painted pink line spray painted across the breadth of his garden delineating the verge the Gosnells City Council considers to be its property.
I was instructed by Richard Pennecuik to park within the pink line. I then went inside to the 'trusted small group of supporters' to get any updates. It's hectic in there. It's always hectic in there.
I didn't manage to establish why the pink line had been drawn, nor by whom. People were consulting collectively, with little discussions going on as asides.
I managed to establish that Cameron Johnson was still up the tree and that, up to that point there had been no visits from the Police, as there were yesterday.
They had been contacted by an independent university radio station that I had emailed last night; but I didn't manage to establish 'how things went'. If I'd been able to stay there for an hour I most likely would have done.
The usual media crowd were milling around waiting for something significant to happen. They often wait around for hours; such is the life of a reporter I guess.
I suspect I might be on film pulling out of the driveway telling Cameron Johnson to "stay cool". It would be nice if nothing more exciting than that happens today.
I'm working as hard and fast as I can emailing and contacting environmental groups, non commercial media outlets, political parties, city councilors and any person, group or body that I think may be interested in any of the issues I perceive at Hume Road, Thornlie.
I even emailed Ernie Dingo who, I believe has stated publicly that his totem is the endangered, red tailed black cockatoo.
Richard Pennicuik got to know quite a lot about the movements of indigenous birds during his extended stay in 'the tree'. To see the article I wrote last night about this issue click here.
Richard also told me that one evening an Aboriginal Elder whose name no-one recorded visited and talked about arranging some 'sacred ceremonial business' regarding the tree. The elder (name not recorded) "gave Richard the Tree to guard".
Richard's supporters told me that the elder reminded them of Elvis Presley. Now I know a couple of local Nyungars that description could fit; and one of them lives in the neighborhood.
When I asked the man I believe may have visited the tree if he had visited Richard he denied that it was him, but he was very supportive of protecting indigenous trees and birds. In fact he told me that he was seeing "Mary G" this week and would mention the issue.
Mary G is famous in Indigenous circles but I am unsure if she has broken into mainstream Australia yet. Mary G is a female impersonator; an hilarious comedian who takes some inspiration from Australia's iconic Dame Edna.
I've emailed some friends who work in the Nyungar Native Title Land Council or who are involved in such issues.
But the question remains; does Richard Pennicuik hold an unofficial native (or non native) title over 'his' tree in Hume Road?
The way I see things such campaigns as Richard's have cross-cultural intersections.
Though I wrote this article over a day ago I haven't been able to upload it until now, due to 'internet connectivity issues".
Keep posted.

Post a CommentEnough allready got to admire the principal but in the begining and at the end who owns the tree and where is the tree planted and the answer to both those questions is the shire and the residents of the shire and australia, so if the shire who are elected to axct on our behalf decide to make mulch i say let them or vore them out. Now i love trees and talk to them and they the trees are my friends and i have yet now to cut any down i believe that the media has made a circus of the issue, which sad because in the end the tree will be mulch
Thanks for the updates.
