Did Facebook Add a Dislike Button?
Thousands of Facebook Users Are Signing Up for Facebook Dislike Button that Doesn't Exist
The problem is that Facebook has not added a dislike button. These groups and fan pages are set up by third party code hackers and not by Facebook itself. These pseudo-dislike button purveyors have not been approved by Facebook and their code may be harmful to your computer. At the very least, you are allowing an unknown third party to access all of your and your friends' Facebook information. For what purpose this Facebook information is being harvested is unknown but can only be detrimental to your privacy at best.
Some of the groups even admit to being a third party application far down on the page but most Facebook users- excited at the prospect of being able to add a Dislike button to their page- don't often get that far before they have given access to their Facebook data. Some require that you provide a valid cell phone number to activate the account.
Several of the Facebook "Dislike" button add-on pages provide instructions that only work for Firefox. They are, in fact, a Firefox add-on and could affect your computer in many underhanded ways. The instructions ensure that you spam all of your friends before you find out that the script doesn't work with any browser other than Firefox. Even if the add-on worked perfectly, the only other Facebook users who could see your dislikes are those who also have the add-on installed.
The poor disclosure of the origin and nature of these third party Facebook "Dislike" buttons, coupled with the spammy nature of having to share it with all of your Facebook contacts make these programs dangerous.
Chris Kelly, Facebook's Chief Privacy Officer, recently reported that Facebook is unlikely to ever install an official "Dislike" button. Concerns at Facebook are that it would send Facebook conversations in a negative direction. He warns that users should not fall for several "scams" out there that claim to install a Facebook "Dislike" button but, in reality, only harvest user information.
