Did Paula Abdul Mock Ellen DeGeneres at VH1's Diva Live Awards?

Paula Abdul Dons Ellen Wig, Duds & Dances like DeGeneres

Who was that goofy dancing girl? Was it comedian Ellen Degeneres or Paula Abdul dancing daffy to Pink's "Get The Party Started" on the VH1's Diva Live Awards? Abdul, recently resigned of Fox's American Idol, put on quite a comical show as she frolicked, shimmied and sashayed down the runway decked out in dowdy DeGeneres duds. Shocked audience members sat absolutely slack jawed, as they flashed double and even triple takes fascinated by Abdul's chameleon like dance fest.

Even the most cynical had to agree it was a beautifully boffo performance. From the blonde feathered mop, to the signature plain pantsuit, Abdul morphed herself into Ellen quite convincingly. However, more than a few are now wondering if it was the best strategy to employ so soon after the dust settled concerning the DeGeneres hiring.

Now Abdul has come under fire. Some say the veteran performer - known for her top notch dancing and choreography as much as her pop hit singing - took things a bit too far, making somewhat too much of a mockery at Ellen's expense. There's a fine line between playful skewering and a nasty, sarcastic skit. Ellen, of course is still riding a wave of publicity over her taking over Paula's spot as the new 'nice' judge at American Idol. After much speculation over who would replace Paula, Ellen landed the plum job over rumored choices as Jessica Simpson or Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham.

Ellen hasn't cracked one joke at the expense of a tin eared, off key crooner, nor taken her seat next to Simon Cowell yet, but the big question on Idol fan's minds is just how will Ellen approach her new gig. Can she out 'nice' Paula? Already there have been whispers that Ellen wants to reign in Simon's acid appraisals of contestants he dislikes. Will Ellen make American Idol a friendlier place, and in the process butt heads with the acerbic Simon? It's probably just what Idol producers want and expect.

If Ellen watched Paula mimic her, she may have taken no small amount of sadistic joy when Abdul nearly had a wipe out. During VH1's Divas Live, Abdul's lively performance of a medley of her hits like "Forever Your Girl" and "Straight Up", Paula tripped and almost stumbled into the crowed.

We'll have to see how Ellen reacts to Paula Abdul's comedic Footloose Flashdance. I'm hoping Ellen dresses up like Paula and sings a mimic medley of Abdul's hits. 'Gay Up'? 'Forever Simon's Girl'? The potential comic answers to Abdul's challenge for Ellen to riff upon are endless.

you might enjoy the article I just posted on American idol and its demise.

Interesting. Mocking people seems to be too popular these days but Ellen probably took it with a grain of salt. She's self-confident enough that nothing is probably going to the bother her.

Great article.... I just clicked on your Youtube link and do not think Paula was being snarky, just having a little fun. Paula's parody gives Ellen even more publicity, so from Ellen's perspective it's all good!

Hard to have an opinion without having seen the skit but you've covered it nicely.

As you pretty much surmised, this skit will probably hurt Paula more than Ellen. If Ellen can resist a counter-attack and take it in stride, she'll indeed prove her maturity and restraint (but only time will tell)!

I didn't actually see it but I don't think it was a good idea to do something like that this early in the game. Distasteful. Ellen will probably laugh it off, though. She's good at letting these things roll over her.
