In case you've been living under a rock for the last 7 years, Tivo is a device that you connect to your TV between your set and either your cable or satellite receiver. It records television shows digitally on a hard drive and allows you to "time shift" - which basically means - record and watch something later - like with a VCR. The big difference is - you don't have to worry about changing tapes - or even buying tapes. You may know Tivo as its other name - DVR (digital video recorder).
Now, if you think that the DVR that your cable provider is giving you is just like Tivo - think again! The Tivo service is very robust and allows you to things that regular DVR just can't do. Don't get me wrong - my Dad has DVR and when I'm visiting - it's better than nothing. Tivo has the so many great features like:
-Season Pass - record all the shows from in a series with just one touch
-Unbox w/ Amazon - download movies and watch on your tv without going to the video store - and a much wider selection than OnDemand
-Tivo Suggestions - your Tivo will learn your viewing habits and suggest shows that you might like - I've discovered so many new shows this way!
-Tivo2Go - copy programs from your Tivo to your computer - you can then put them on a portable device - I put programs on my PSP when I'm traveling for work!
-Two tuners so that you can record 2 shows at one time - or watch a show while recording another!
Tivo has so many great things to offer. I wish I did get paid by them - but I'm not. I just really love Tivo. I bought our first one as a birthday gift for my wife in 2001. I bought it on Ebay from a guy that lived two towns over from me. I met him in the parking lot of a movie theater to avoid the shipping charges. :-)Since then, I've upgraded and now have 2 Series 2 and 2 Series 3 Tivos in the house. This allows me to record 5 different shows at one time - now that's multitasking!
What do I watch? Well - just about everything! Heroes, Bionic Woman, Life, Survivor, American Idol, Rules of Engagement, My Name is Earl, The Office, Smallville, Snapped, CSI:Miami, American Gangster, Gotti, Salt & Pepa Show, The Hills, Tell Me You Love Me, Curb Your Enthusiasm... and so many more!
What made me write such a glowing review of Tivo? Well, this morning we were having a problem with our cable. In two rooms the picture was coming in bad and I couldn't fix it before coming to work. In our family room, the picture was fine. When I told my wife this - she asked could I record her soaps on the good TV - as they usually tape in the bedroom. I went online to Tivo.com and got my Tivo in the living room to record her shows. It took me less than five minutes - and I'm now a hero - thank you Tivo - I love you!
