Did Tiger Woods Really Cheat on His Wife?

Rita Jan
There's something to be said for admitting to a crime just to get the media off of your back. Obviously, many people immediately believe that Tiger Woods was having an affair, and media coverage alone, even if it's about something slightly different, can warp individual and group perspectives. Tiger Woods is one of the most identifiable athletes of all time. He has a lot of backing from a lot of different companies, and his name is almost a household brand.

So, why wouldn't he confess to something just to get the public to say, "Oh, well at least he admitted it. Let's give him a break now." Well, this is an interesting question. I think he would. A lot of publicists, and he is not lacking in publicists, would advise him to accept responsibility as a career booster, and to clear his name...even if he didn't do anything. Publicists notoriously care very little about the personal lives of their clients, concentrating instead on what will bring them more fame, no matter what.

This Tiger Woods scandal was like a bomb dropped on the outer world, since his name has always been clean, he has never really suffered public defamation, and he seems like "a really good guy." Even if the scandal concerning his wife was not true in the least, his reputation has been marred in the public eye, or so it seems.

I notice that, just when the news moves on to other, bigger events, a breakthrough in the Tiger Woods case comes in to reveal itself and bring him more publicity. I doubt this is a coincidence. I think that every single revelation is timed with exact precision, that whether he cheated on his wife or not, he is getting plenty of money out of it, and that his character is not in question, but his bank account may be.

Another possibility is that the cheating spouse propaganda may have been put out there by one of his publicists in the first place. It certainly brought him more news coverage, better fame, and the sympathy of a lot of average Americans. You have probably heard someone say, "I wish the media would just leave him alone. These scandals are never based upon the truth."

I applaud Mr. Woods for his cunning, if this is so. I smile and nod to his publicists, if this is one of their plans. It's a good one. But it is not airtight. There will always be people like me who recognize that it could all be for the money.
