DIEGO MARADONA: KING of the WORLD !
Maradona Rules Once More, Only This Time Off Pitch at Africa 2010
For those whom have followed this crazy but utterly fascinating character's career it comes as no surprise that Diego Maradona is the undoubted star of Africa 2010.
His touchline antics and press conferences are amongst the enduring memories of this tournament so far. Wearing a sharp suit, hugely bearded and adorning a sparkling diamond Maradona's appearance maybe that of a Colombian hitman, but there is little doubt that the players are inspired by his presence and worship the ground on which he walks.
On the pitch Diego's Argentina have been sublime with Lionel Messi, Maradona's ''heir' apparent spearheading their charge for a third world cup. The coach refuses to accept any praise, instead he heaps all back onto the team. For this they give their all and more for the little Argentine who though now turned fifty still has that mischievous twinkle in the eye.
Argentina charge forward in breathtaking manner. With Messi, Higuain, Ze Maria and Tevez, also Arguero and Milito in reserve they possess without doubt the finest array of attacking talent in Africa 2010 Their Achilles heel is in defence where amongst other culprits Demichalis and Heinze cause heart attacks in Buenos Aires whenever in possession.
Maradona does not consider himself a tactical genius instead he gives advice, tells anecdotes of his past deeds, (on pitch hopefully) and understands just what is required to win that golden trophy. Controversial to a default the capacity to lash out at those he considers enemies remains as his recent outburst to the worlds press shows.
'˜Many journalists should apologise to my players. I am not suggesting you drop your trousers, but it would be honest and great so we all get along better'˜.
If Argentina do triumph here in South Africa maybe it is time to realise as the church of Maradona already believes that Diego does indeed belong amongst the angels. Once almost through death door due to drugs and alcohol abuse Diego Armando Maradona has not just come back with a vengeance.
He is set to conquer the world!
