1) The first step in losing weight is to stop drinking most of your calories. When I was younger the thought of drinking water made me gag. That was, until I found water that I actually liked. I discovered that I love bottled spring water. If you don't like water no matter what, then try Crystal Light. And remember that juices aren't necessarily good for you. Most fruit juices have a lot of calories and sugar. And V8 juice has a lot of sodium.
2) Changing your snack habits is a must. The thought of giving up those salty or sugary snacks may cause you to rethink your decision to attempt losing weight. But it doesn't have to be that bad. In my experience, once you stop eating those things, you eventually stop craving them. Instead, try eating some fruit.
3) Keep your new exercise regime realistic to deter quitting. We've all heard that people should exercise for thirty minutes a day. I easily lost twenty pounds a few years ago by doing Taebo. Really, it's just a matter of finding something you like. Another idea to try is getting a treadmill and walking while watching television or listening to music. The beauty of a treadmill or an exercise bike is that they can be used indoors in air conditioning. But if this isn't for you, try finding a physical activity that you like.
4) Bring in a friend on your new commitment. For some people, it's very motivating to be competitive with someone else. If this describes you, then finding a buddy who also wants to lose weight may be an excellent idea.
5) Don't go from one extreme to another. Trying to eat right is something that you want to ease into. Going from double cheeseburgers to salad is going to make you feel deprived. To begin with, don't even try to stay within a certain number of calories a day. Simply try to cook better, such as including vegetables and not frying everything. Once you get used to eating more healthy, then you can start to watch your calorie intake. But never try to eat food that you don't like because then you're setting yourself up for failure. Only cook foods that you enjoy.
6) Don't skip breakfast since that actually slows your metabolism. Rather than skipping meals, consider eating more times a day. It may help you to feel less hungry all the time if you change from eating three meals a day to eating five smaller meals a day. The theory here is that if you're always eating then you won't be hungry.
7) Sleep is an unexpected item on a weight loss list. However, when trying to lose weight, people tend to be cranky. And if you don't get enough sleep, you're going to be even more cranky. If you're in a bad mood, you'll probably turn to snacking too. Besides, if you're asleep, you can't be snacking between meals.
