Diet Changes for Fall Weather

Lola Inez

Seasonal changes generally dictate the type of foods we eat particularly if we are sensitive to the needs of our bodies. The fall weather is the perfect time of year to enjoy favorite comfort foods and all the trappings in addition to leaving behind a relaxed summer diet and preparing your body for the colder season.

Even for regions that are seasonally warm such as southern California the craving for rich warm comfort foods accompany an overcast or cool day or evening. This is the perfect time to sit down and revamp your diet for fall weather. Look through one of your favorite cookbooks and create a 7-day menu rich and healthy and designed to provide your body with the demands of the change of season.

Begin the day with a warm wholesome grain such as oatmeal. Not to worry this is not your grandmother's oatmeal but rather fancy fruit flavored and designer influenced oatmeal that do more than make the thick warm breakfast grain tolerable but even good. If you opt for your grandmother's oatmeal being whole oats it is easy to find at stores that sell bulk. Whole oats are healthy and an ideal choice for individuals with high cholesterol.

Get creative with your lunch and dinner dishes for fall weather. Skip chips and a sandwich and opt for a bowl of hot soup and a Panini or grilled cheese with favorite deli slice added. The difference of a warm toasted sandwich versus a sandwich on fresh bread is paramount during colder months.

When dinner rolls around consider making rich stews, broths, soups and chowders with vegetables. Serve with a whole wheat roll, side salad and or tomato slices or even seasonal fresh fruit. Not only will your body respond well to the warmth of the food during cooler weather but also your overall well-being.
