All food is eventually going to be turned into sugar by the body. The key is to look for foods that digest slowly in order to give your body a moderate, stable blood sugar level. Think of which is better for a biological system, dumping large amount of sugar into the bloodstream at random times or instead keeping an even amount of sugar in the blood. Your blood sugar will be much easier to control if you opt for the healthy slowly digesting foods that will allow you to burn a lower amount of energy for a longer period of time.
The types of foods that digest slowly are high in fiber and made of complex carbohydrates. Carbohydrates will come in two flavors: Complex or simple. Simple carbohydrates are basically sugar that does not need to be broken down. The sugar in simple carbohydrates will go almost directly into the blood stream. This is known as a sugar buzz because it burns in the system so quickly and the energy is used up right after. Complex carbohydrates, like whole grains and oatmeal will take a longer time before the sugar is entered into the blood stream. Complex carbohydrates provide a steady stream of energy that lasts for longer.
So in the end it comes down to the choice of food in your diet for improving blood sugar. When you are eating carbohydrates eat beans, peas, granola, and oat meal. You should absolutely stay away from foods that will create a spike in sugar levels. Food like candy and refined white pasta will cause a spike in your blood sugar levels that will leave your pancreas exhausted.
Without changing your diet to a diet for improving your blood sugar levels you are asking to increase your risks of health problems dramatically. A common symptom of high blood sugar is the loss of limbs. Blood sugar is very important for overall health and you should follow a diet that supports it.
