Diet: Prayer of the Heart

Miko Amaranthine

Eating habits that cause eating disorders such as overindulging (binge-eating) and/or under eating (bulmia/anorexia) are in fact caused by sins. Sins are caused by internal and external pressures but nonetheless are sins causing distress to our bodies. Can prayer assist the heart and brain to work together for greater health of the body and mind?

Many people claim that eating disorders are caused by unparalleled desires that the brain generates throughout the body. This generated desire starts the blood pumping in the body and persuades the body to perform sinful acts such as over/under-indulging with food. This act of desire is an act of sin that is tempting the body. Sins are stirred up by desires from external pressures such as television commercials promoting high fat/low nutrition foods, fashion ads in popular magazine ads flaunting under weight models, government funded project/promotions convincing consumers to eat more dairy to lower obesity in America. In today's society its common to blame these external desires for our own problems. This is commonly done by news agencies and individuals alike.

The question that comes to mind is why do these external desires not affect everyone in the same way? And, why do we as humans allow these external projects/media allow us as level-headed consumers to be influenced in such a way? Logically, I want to transgress the blame on internal desires which are indeed a sin. If these external influences were indeed the main and only reason for our actions a) everyone would be affected the same way b) we'd be mindless individuals without the ability to reasonably think for ourselves. For instance, the Ocean's series of movies which have actors as Brad Pitt, George Clooney and so on would cunningly influence all viewers to rob casinos and/or other high-profiting businesses. This is not the case though. We understand that such an action is sinful and our minds reason with our morals. So, it's not external factors but internal.

Hence it's important that we all look within ourselves to see where things are going wrong and pray for change. For instance, are you overindulging in food, suffering from an addiction to food, fighting the want to be the skinniest, dealing with depression, and/or so on. Weight issues are not always a sin but the basis behind the issue could be one. Some things are out of our control but most of the time it is not the case with being overweight/underweight. Praying for a change of heart can be the prayers that change your life.
