Diet Tips - 5 Ways to Stay Motivated

Kate Grant
If dieting were easy, no one would ever have to do it more than once. We'd all wake up in the morning, decide to lose weight and just do it. End of story. But things aren't that simple. The thing that gets in our way the most is lack of motivation. Sure, on January 2 we are all ready to knuckle down, eat some salads, and get to the gym. But by February 2, or maybe even January 12, that motivation may wither and die. Then we're back to where we started, unhappy with our weight, but not able to do anything about it.

What's the solution? Find ways to get motivated and stay that way. These 5 simple tips can help.

Tip #1. Find the right program for your life.

If you're using a diet or exercise plan because it worked for your cousin, or your neighbor, or a celebrity, chances are you've already sabotaged yourself. Take recommendations from people, but you have to make any diet plan your own. The reason there are so many different weight loss programs and products is because we are all different. Your body, brain and life are yours alone.

Find a diet that challenges you, but doesn't defeat you. It shouldn't be easy or impossible.

Tip #2. Develop realistic goals for your future.

Goals should be more than the total amount of weight you want to lose. Most experts say maintaining weight loss is about changing your life. Remember this is a long term process. So make goals that you can achieve and celebrate. If you're just starting to workout, instead of worrying about needing to run five miles, make it goal to get exercise of some kind 4 days a week for the first month. Starting a strict diet program? Set a goal of drinking the recommended amounts of water for the first week.

Making goals that you can accomplish quickly will help realize that you can do it, and keep you invested in moving forward, instead of just looking forward. Keep creating and adjusting your goals to make sure you are still being challenged.

Tip #3. Reward yourself when you succeed at something.

It's easy to get so focused on what you're doing that you forget to take a minute and realize what you've already done. When your review your goals and achieve something, take time to celebrate that. Give yourself little prizes to mark your success. It could be a gold star on the calendar for every day you complete a workout. Or a funny apron for a month of healthy home cooked meals. Whatever makes you smile will work. Sometimes just 15 extra minutes of sleep or a long bubble bath will do it at the end of a long hard week.

Just remember, your weight loss is a race with only one person, so you're always in the lead. Be proud of that.

Tip #4. Forgive yourself and move on from setbacks.

Remember, changing yourself is hard work. Learning a new way to live is difficult, and there will be setbacks. You might not meet all of your goals. But don't let that stop you. It's a clichè to say "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again." It's also true, and important. if you miss a workout, or eat something not on your diet, don't beat yourself up. Think about why it happened. Did you set a goal that's impossible? Were you feeling bad about something? Figure out what went wrong, and how to keep it from happening again. Then, just let it go. You're a human being, and we are all imperfect.

Don't give up because you did something wrong. Use it as a chance to start fresh, rededicated and ready to keep going.

Tip #5. Have a good support system.

It is important to get validation not just from yourself, but from others, if you want long term success with a weight loss plan. Let people in your life know what you're doing and how you're doing. Chances are they will have gone through something similar, and will be happy to support you. Plus, they'll be excited to see you doing well. And when you're not, they can help remind you that you can do it. If the people in your life aren't going to be helpful, find some who are. Many weight loss plans have in person meetings and counseling sessions. If you can't find anything in your area, try the internet. Find discussion groups for people using a similar program, and become an active member. You can get the support you need, and help others do the same.

By applying the tips above in ways that work for you, weight loss still won't be easy, but it will be possible. Keep to your diet and stay with your workout plan, and watch yourself succeed like never before. There is no better inspiration than what you do yourself.
