Dietary Restrictions: No Matter What or Why Your Restrictions Are in Place

Ward Tipton
Some people live on very restrictive diets. Now how exactly "restrictive" is perceived may be open to debate but the fact remains that many people completely abstain from any and all foods from particular food groups. Some people do it out of a sense of personal belief, others do it due to their religious convictions and still others have simply chosen this way of life because it seems to suit them better. Some people do it out of sheer necessity because of what they can or can not afford.

No matter what their reasons are for restricting their diets though, they still are going to need a vast source of nutrients. They are also going to need to find some beneficial alternatives to all of the nutritional benefits that they are missing out on. That is not to say that these diets do not work well because they do if they are implemented properly and in a healthy manner. However, your body really does need a wide variety of nutrients and you need to make certain that your body has everything that it needs in order to function properly. Fortunately, almost without exception, there are viable and healthy alternatives to almost all of the food groups that are given up with these restrictive diets.

Since the most common food group given up is meat, the venture will start there. Now some people do not eat meat for spiritual reasons, some because of personal beliefs, some because they are simply vegetarians or even vegans (who usually have very strong convictions about animal flesh) and some people are just too poor to be able to afford much meat. Fortunately, meat is also one of the easiest food groups to replace in an easy, cheap and healthy manner.

The primary nutritional benefits from most meats are proteins and fats. Now before you go thinking fats are not an important part of your diet, rest assured that they are. Again, that is why you need to be armed with information before you begin any weight loss (or weight gain) regimen. These proteins can be found in many beans and soy products. One incredible source of "meat" replacement comes from the legume that we know as a peanut. (It is not technically a root, or a bean)

The peanut is an excellent source of both proteins and fats providing almost the same nutritional benefit as most lean beef. Anybody who has ever made home-made peanut butter will know about the fat that is involved. Still, when this is mixed in with the rest of the peanut butter, it becomes a smooth and delicious treat. Add a little bit of honey to the mix and you have a treat that your kids, and likely even you will love immensely ... and be able to eat all of it that you want ... within common sense of course.

Milk and dairy products are other food groups that are frequently sworn off for many of the same reasons. Fortunately, again, there are many viable replacements for this food group. Soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk and many other varieties of milk are readily available on the market today ... or can even be made without too much work right in the comfort of your own home. In fact, most nuts actually do make a fairly good substitute for milk, though you may want to refine the recipe according to your personal tastes.

No matter what restrictions are placed on your diet, there is no reason that you cannot continue eating healthy and balanced foods that taste great and help you to lose, gain or even to maintain your current weight.
