Differences Between Satellite Internet and DSL: What You Need to Know!

Ann Grant
Satellite internet is faster in terms of browsing speed, downloading and uploading when compared to DSL or even cable internet which many claim to be the fastest internet option available. Since the internet is accessed due to a satellite connection, there are no dead zones or areas of blackouts (unless you live in dense jungle).

A satellite internet connection is relatively easy to set up since all that is necessary is a receiver connected to your computer. Many users of satellite internet experience unrivaled downloading and uploading speeds and have been known to be amazed at just how fast it is along with its reliability.

Digital subscriber line or DSL is a form of broadband internet, which allows the quick uploading and downloading of files. An important feature of DSL is the fact that no new wires or cabling is necessary once you have an existing telephone line. There is no need to worry though since the DSL does not tie up your phone line and as such allows for simultaneous use of both (i.e. you can talk on the phone while browsing the internet). The only equipment necessary is a DSL modem and allows you to brows the internet at a much faster rate when compared to a dial up connection but much slower than a DSL connection.

Satellite internet uses dual connections to help improve bandwidth and stability of the connection while DSL uses only one connection. The connection speed of DSL varies depending on various conditions while the connection of the satellite internet is always constant. Satellite connection also does not need require the user to have a telephone installed to access the internet while persons who use DSL internet much have a telephone line already installed to make use of the service.

Satellite internet is hence very useful in businesses where a constant dependable internet connection is vital to production, due to its dual connections. The DSL internet can be subjected to a myriad of problems stemming from the telephone lines which can be cut, disconnected or faulty and result in a poor internet connection. The satellite internet is very useful for travelers and people on the go since all they would need to carry with them is the satellite receiver while it is impossible for someone to carry their DSL internet with them on their travels. Satellite internet can also be accessed by people living in rural areas where there are no telephone lines, while DSL or dial up internet could not be and option for these people due to the fact that they do not have a telephone line.

Satellite internet is much more feature rich, convenient and reliable when compared to DSL internet and the only advantage that DSL holds over satellite internet is the price. With the current advances in internet technology, the gap between the two could close but any strides made in DSL technology would have to be major to help it to overtake satellite internet as the best internet option available.
