Different Jobs for Dogs

Lauren Romano
Humans aren't the only ones that make great employees. Dogs do their jobs well and all they ask for in return is a belly scratch and a doggie treat.

Police Dogs are an important part of any police force. They are part of the K-9 Unit which does important jobs such as sniff out drugs and bombs, locate missing persons, go on patrols with police officers and other important tasks. They dogs are trained specifically to work with law enforcement.

Assistance dogs assist people who are physically disabled or who are prone to seizures. For working with people who are physically disabled, dogs provide help in picking up objects, getting their owners different items or performing tasks that are requested of them. For working with those who are prone to seizures, dogs are known to sense a seizure before it comes on. They can alert that person before it happens so that person can contact help and get to a safe space where they won't injure themselves. These dogs are also trained to get help in case of an emergency.

Hearing dogs help out those who are hearing impaired. They can alert their owner to a phone ringing, a smoke detector going off, a ringing doorbell, or alert them to approaching people when they are home.

When you see a dog performing in a circus or participating in a race or in a show they are actually working. These dogs have the job of entertaining the public, showing off their skills and bringing enjoyment to those that are watching them.

Rescue dogs are dogs that help out in search and rescue situations. They can locate people who have been trapped in avalanches, mudslides, earthquakes or any other life threatening situation where a person is trapped and temporarily unable to be found. Dogs have incredible sense and smell and have a very good ability to see at night, all ideal for helping in this profession.

For years and years dogs have been used for herding. These dogs are used to herd sheep and cattle and keep them orderly and get them into their pens.

Working in the entertainment industry can be difficult to get into. There are dogs that work doing commercials, TV shows and in movies being trained to perform stunts and do different tasks on camera .

Dogs have long worked as sled dogs, participating with a sled dog team and transporting heavy goods that otherwise would not have been able to have been delivered as efficiently. These dogs also participate in sled dog races.

For those that are vision impaired, dogs are a huge help and a big part of their day to day life. These dogs are guide dogs trained to protect their owners. They guide their owners across streets or around any other obstacles so that their owner can live a more independent life.

Therapy dogs are dogs that bring comfort and happiness to those who might otherwise not have day to day contact with a dog. They work in hospitals, jails, senior citizen facilities, nursing homes, juvenile facilities and many other places.

Dogs are not only man's best friend, but are also play a huge part in doing important jobs that otherwise would not have been able to have been done quite as well or even at all.

My dog has her small jobs at home, but that's about it. Her top priorities however are apparently the same as your dogs!
