Different Reasons Why Your Dog is Limping

Kelly Fleming
If you notice that your 4-legged friend is limping there can be numerous problems afflicting him. Seeking out your Veterinarian for answers is the most important thing to do first.

Broken Bones:

This is actually a very common occurrence. Most owners that have back yard decks do not realize that the little gaps in between the boards can break your pet's toes. There is a chance for other broken bones also. Any broken bones even if it is just a toe will need to be checked out by a Doctor. If they do not heal right your beloved friend could be in pain for a long time to come.

Ripped or Tore Pads:

This is a sensitive area for dogs. They sweat through their pads; this is also a vital part of the paw. The shoe is to a human, as the pad is to a dog. When the pad is tore or ripped it is very painful and the dog could bleed a lot. If the cut is deep enough surgery could be required, this is up to the Veterinarian.

If there is just a small cut the wound can usually be wrapped up for a couple of days. This will help it to heal and prevent the dog from constantly licking. Infection is still a concern so you will need to monitor the area.

Items Stuck in the Paw:

Numerous items can get stuck in your dog's paw. This is especially true if they are very active no matter where they are. Some common items that have made their way into your pooches' paw are:

  • Staples
  • Stickers
  • Screws
  • Twigs
  • Toy Pieces
  • Metal Fragments
  • Rocks

Looking for Attention:

Yes, animals have been known to 'milk' it to get extra attention from you. If there are no other clues and you have check you dog's leg up and down. Keep an eye on them when they are doing something else. If someone walks by outside, and you pet takes off running with no problem. This is a sign that they are okay. Their leg might be a little sore but if they are walking on it they should be just fine.

Your beloved pet cannot come up to you and say, "Hey something is wrong, I need medical attention!" You will have to watch your pet. You are the only one who knows their personality-you will be able to tell when something is wrong.

I took my dog to the vet today. He's been unwilling to put weight on his back right foot and delicately "toeing" the ground with it only. The vet palpated his leg and found that he did not flinch in pain at any point. She also gave him a blood test, which ruled out Lyme disease.
She put him on 400 mg. of Amoxicillin (antiobiotic) because he did have a swollen lymph gland in his leg, though the blood test showed that he did not have an elevated white blood cell count. He's also on 75 mg. of Rimadyl for the pain.

My roommates dog has been limping pathetically for 2 days. I told her she needs to take her to the vet, her little dog ankle is swollen. Good article.
