Different Room Lighting Techniques

A Primer to the Forms of Lighting for the Home

Whether you are building or remodeling a room, lighting is as important as the room's function and décor. Too little light and one cannot see if doing close up work and too much light will detract from an intimate feel. One has to take into consideration what the room's purpose will be is it going to be for business or pleasure? For work or parties? There are four main categories that lighting falls into and from those four, there are hundreds of designs to choose from or create. The four main categories are:

Chandeliers: From days of old where the lights were nothing more than wooden planks with either animal fat oil pots or candles that burned on top, chandeliers have developed in form and function. They give the area that is lit, a glow of charm and personality. There is but one thing to keep in mind if a chandelier is chosen for the room and that would be the chandelier's durability. If a chandelier is to be used in a hallway or entryway, wrought iron is an excellent choice for the area. They are durable and give a bold statement as well as it can also be the center focal point in the area. Crystal or hand blown glass chandeliers would be the choice for a dining room. The crystal chandelier gives the dining room a touch of high style when suspended over the table. One does not have to use a straight flip switch either, a chandelier can be installed on a dimmer switch dial that can be lowered to create a warm or even romantic glow. Remember, chandeliers are not only for large rooms, there are smaller versions called "mini" chandeliers which are smaller replicas of the original and do not lack in the same style and design as their bigger counterparts.

Lamps: From the elegant and stylish to the playful and funky, there is a light that will brighten specific spots. Table lamps are a good choice where close work is done, such as reading, hobbies or working at a desk. If desk space is limited, there are floor lamps that have swing arms that can illuminate the areas that need to be lit. Floor lamps also can light an entire area and are a good choice for rooms in which entertaining or family gatherings take place. Large or small, a lamp is good investment and give you the added benefit of being mobile, if the layout of a room changes.

Pendant: Just like their jewelry namesake, a pendant light is a single dazzling light that becomes the focal point of a room and act much the same way as a chandelier does though on a smaller scale. The pendant light can be used as a single light or in a grouping of lights, both larger and smaller to give the room ambiance. The light fixtures can be made from an assortment of metals from simple brushed nickel to copper as well as either holding a single light or multiple lights in a grouping. The pendant light works well in small rooms where even a mini chandelier light is too large for the room or entry way. As with all lights, the styles range from traditional with a Victorian feel and style to modern which lends itself to a contemporary style and feel to any room.

Wall Sconces: From the days where a caveman lit a bowl of animal fat and set it on a high rock outcropping to today where the designs fit any décor, wall sconces have always given a room a soft glow. Now and days, the new lighting trending for wall sconces is to frame one's fireplace mantel and the artwork that hangs above. These lights can also be used to light hallways or entry ways where there is not enough space for a traditional lamp or a hanging lamp form. Traditional wrought iron and glass gives a location a homey, rustic and down to earth feel, while shiny metals and glass can give a room a more modern sleek design and feel.

With so many designs to choose from, one can get overwhelm, but if the four forms are kept in mind while designing and purchasing a room, the possibilities though still endless are at least given a direction to follow. A light can help bring out a person's personality in a room.
