Different Ways to Flavor Corn on the Cob

Sally Albright
Corn on the cob is a staple at many summer barbecues. The usual way to flavor your corn on the cob is with butter, salt and pepper. While that is perfectly fine, there are other methods for flavoring your corn on the cob. Here are just a few alternatives.

Garlic Corn on the Cob

You can easily create garlicky corn on the cob by using garlic butter in place of regular butter. Simply mix together the softened butter, crushed garlic, and a few herbs like basil. Brush the butter on your hot corn on the cob and enjoy! Truly delicious!

Spicy Corn on the Cob

If you like things a little spicy try this recipe out. Cover your corn on the cob with butter while hot so that it melts. Sprinkle a mixture of garlic powder, chili powder, and cayenne on the buttered corn and enjoy. The amount of cayenne you add should be based on your tolerance for heat. A tasty alternative to this mixture would be to add Old Bay seasoning to your corn in the cob in place of the spice mixture. You could also brush on a sauce of melted butter and hot sauce to spice things up.

Vinegar Corn on the Cob

Want a sweet and tangy flavor for your corn on the cob? Roll your corn on the cob in some vinaigrette, either freshly made or bottled, and enjoy! You can also try ranch dressing in place of the vinaigrette. Go ahead be adventurous and try some out!

Mustard Corn on the Cob

Rather than boiling your corn on the cob try grilling them. You can create tasty corn on the cob by placing it on a piece of foil large enough to wrap around the corn. Before wrapping your corn in the foil place a mixture of softened butter and mustard on top of the corn. After you wrap the corn on the cob place it on the grill. You should grill the corn on the cob over medium high heat for approximately 15-25 minutes. You could also wrap the corn in its own husk rather than foil. This method of cooking usually takes less time, around 10-15 minutes.

If your corn is not as sweet as you'd like it to be you can add a bit of sugar into your pot of boiling water to help sweeten the corn. One recipe found online even suggests adding milk and cream, the recipe can be found here.

Other small changes you can make are using flavored butters in place of regular butter, seasoning salt rather than plain salt, and grilling rather than boiling. You'll never grow tired of corn on the cob this summer when you try out these delicious ideas for flavoring your corn.
