Looking for ways to keep your house's waste to a minimum? Want to know how to recycle everyday items that tend to get thrown away? Here are some simple tips to get your house going in the "green" direction.

Junk Mail/Ads/Newspapers
Next time you get junk mail, instead of tossing it out, why don't you save them in a plastic or paper bag and put it in your recycle bin on a weekly basis? Households receive junk mail on almost an everyday basis and all of the mail can be recycled. I do this for newspapers and grocery ads as well. It always gives me a good feeling that I'm not wasting paper that has already been put to no good use such as junk mail and am now putting it towards a positive purpose. It takes the same amount of time of throwing out a piece of junk mail as it does to put it in the recycle bin. So why not, do something for the better?

Shampoo/Body Wash/Lotion Bottles

Most people when they finish up a shampoo bottle just causally toss it into the wastebasket. However, these bottles can start adding up in our landfill, considering how many people in household do this per house! If you tend to use the same shampoo over and over again, considering in purchasing a larger volume bottle instead of the individual 13 oz versions. This way instead or ending up with two plastics bottles when finished you will only have one. Also, instead of tossing these bottles out, put these in your recycle bin. If you're the type that carries a portable hand lotion with you, instead of continuing to purchase individual smaller sized bottles, use the same one once it is finished and refill it with lotion again from a larger bottle from home.

Paper Towels/Toilet Paper Rolls/Tissue Boxes

Ever thought of saving the cardboard rolls on the inside of paper towels and toilet paper instead of tossing them out? Keep a plastic bag handy and when ever you used up a toilet paper or paper towel roll, put the ending cardboard piece into the bag. Once the bag is full, put it in your recycle bin. There is no reason for these to be thrown out when thy can be recycled again. Also, instead of using paper towels and wasting paper, consider using a hand towel to wipe your hands dry or a rag to clean up counter spills. These can be hand washed and won't create excess paper waste. Make it a habit to recycle tissue boxes as well. There's no need to be lay and toss that in the trash. Everything does add up.
