Everyone has one in their life, the perpetual drama queen, and the drama queens in our lives can perpetually over inflate any situation to the point of making it unbearable. But, is it possible to react to her drama without just further egging her on? Is it possible to turn the tables on her so that she realizes how foolish her melodrama is truly making her look? Well, coming from someone who has been dealing with the ultimate drama queen for the last couple of days, let me give you a few pointers on stealing her thunder. After a couple of rounds with you she will learn to tone it down, or stay away from your drama stealing self entirely.
- Don't allow yourself to be dragged in to her drama. There are moments in everyone's life that are dramatic this cannot be avoided. However, there are also people that view all of life's changes as an opportunity to react in an overly dramatic fashion. So, simply refuse to be pulled in. She will undoubtedly try to reel you in with stories, tears, outbursts or even arguments, basically anything that will direct attention to her. So, regardless of what she does retain your cool and let it pass over you. Show her and everyone else around that you are the bigger person by retaining your poise in spite of her meltdowns.
- Point out to her that she is making a scene. Most of the time with a drama queen the fact that they are creating a scene by no means escapes their senses. However, very rarely does anyone have the guts that it requires to tell them directly that they are causing a scene, and could they please tone their behavior down a little. Now, that being said at this point a true drama queen may launch a full frontal attack on you letting you know that a scene is appropriate, but once again retain your cool and let them know this is not the correct time or place but that you would be glad to discuss it with them at a later, more private time.
- If all else fails, walk away. The entire point of being a drama queen is to gain attention. By walking away completely, you are refusing to let them accomplish the entire objective of their dramatic behavior.
When dealing with a true drama queen, the results can be stressful to the breaking point. So, at some point, especially for those of us dealing with a drama queen on a daily basis, it is imperative to learn how to diffuse their dramatic behavior without looking like an unsympathetic or uncaring person yourself. But rest assured, with my tips you will not only be able to diffuse their dramatic behavior, but you will walk away looking like the only rose in a field of thistles
