Digging in the Dirt for Diamonds

Sometimes you never know what you can find when you are not really looking for anything. Case in point, the young girl in California who was playing in her own backyard recently and discovered a diamond.

A little 8-year-old girl named April Sanati in Torrance, California was practicing her golf swing in the backyard of the family home when she spotted something shiny. In fact, all that glitters isn't always gold, sometimes it's a diamond.

Sanati picked it up and took it in the house to show her father who immediately thought it was a Cubic Zirconia until he took it over to the sliding glass door and it left a scratch. From there, the father took it to the Mall's jewelry store who confirmed the authenticity of the stone. It's valued at about $1,000 and is a full one carat gem.

The Sanati's have lived in the home for over ten years and have no idea who the owner of the diamond is. April is already making plans to spend the money. You can see her here.

This isn't the first time that a little girl has discovered a diamond in the dirt. In 2007, thirteen-year-old Nicole Ruhter, found a tea-colored, 2.93-carat diamond in the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. You can visit the website for the Park here.

In 2008, a six-year-old, found a 1.26-carat diamond ring at a Wal-Mart. But, in that case, the diamond engagement ring was returned to the owner just in time for her wedding day.

I have to admit, the only shiny things I've ever found are pennies.
