Digital Backpacks and Technology Education Important for Teachers

How Teachers Are Applying Technology in the Classroom

Christine Cadena
In classroom settings across the United States, personal computers, PCs, have become commonplace for the teacher's use. With, at least, one computer in every classroom, teachers are on a drive to learn not only the software but also the hardware processing for their networked PC in the classroom setting.

For many teachers, the training offered on the school's new computer and networking system are usually limited to the software processing programs. Learning to use Excel, Word and the school's grading system is often the limit of the teacher's understanding of their PC. In many cases, the skills acquired with regard to these programs, is taught in an instructor driven classroom setting, with little opportunity for hands-on application.

In an effort to promote teacher education and understanding, especially with regard to the school's technology, many school districts are now encouraging education and support services both inside and outside of the school. As an educational opportunity that is paid for by the school district, it is the hopeful outcome that each teacher will seek out the additional training they need, based upon their curriculum and specific software and hardware needs.

In many of the support resource programs, the education to the teachers comes in the form of a constructivist format. Posing a set of issues or problems, teachers are then provided the tools to fix the problem and resolve the software or hardware issue themselves. While fundamental tools are taught and given, it is the teacher's wit and stamina that may ultimately determine their success at expanding the use of the technology in the classroom setting.

As the parent of a child who attends school in a setting where a personal computer is present, ask the teacher what resources are available to them through the PC and through the school district. While many parents do not inquire of teacher technology knowledge, it may help you, as the parent, to understand what your child's teacher has available as technological resources and then to inquire of that technology's use.

For some teachers, their specific personal computer has come equipped with a Digital Backpack. Simply put, the Digital Backpack is a backpack that is full of information regarding the hardware and software programs that were placed on the teacher's computer. While the teacher may not share the content details with you, ask about the Digital Backpack and what steps the teacher is taking to ensure they are well versed in the technology they are using and will apply in their educational process.

In both private and public school settings, teachers are becoming more tech savvy as personal computers are placed into classrooms. Using computers to complete simple software processing, many teachers are moving beyond the basic education, accessing resources outside of the school setting, and searching for hands-on education. By asking the questions about technology availability, you can encourage your child's teacher to make use of every resource available.
