Digital Binoculars

For many years, bird watchers have used binoculars to get better views of birds in their natural habitats. The drawback with using binoculars, however, was that they had to be put down in order to take a picture of the birds, which could cause the birds to fly or be lost from view. Some bird watchers gave up using binoculars and began watching birds through the zoom lens of cameras. This worked for bird watchers, but some people continued to struggle.

People who went out the sea to watch whales and dolphins were more hesitant to take expensive digital cameras out on boats with them. The fear was that the salt water and the sea air would cause damage to the delicate mechanics of the cameras.

Due to technological advances, it is now possible for bird watchers, whale watchers and any one else to use binoculars for a good view and take great pictures at the same time. Binocular and camera manufacturers have worked together to combine the long range durability with the convenience of digital cameras. This created what is known as digital binoculars.

Digital binoculars are simply a pair of binoculars combined with a basic point and shoot digital camera. When a person considers purchasing a digital camera it is important for a person to consider that the binocular's magnification is also the camera's magnification. If a set of digital binocular is rated 10x30, the magnification is ten. The first number is always the magnification and the second number is the size of the front lens of the binoculars. An average pair of digital binoculars would have a range of eight.

The number of megapixels should also be considered when purchasing a set of digital binoculars. The higher the number of megapixels in the camera means the picture will be clearer. In the average 4x6 photograph the number of megapixels is unlikely to make a significant difference, but if the picture is enlarged or cropped the picture may become blurry if the number of megapixels is low.

Digital binoculars typically store images on a memory card or a compact flash drive. Some lower end (less expensive) digital binoculars may not have an external storage option and only allow a limited number of images stored in the internal memory.

It is a good idea for a person to purchase a pair of digital binoculars that contains an LCD screen. The LCD screen helps to form a frame around photos and ensures the placement is correct, when taking them. When all pictures have been taken, it is easier to determine which ones need to be deleted by looking at them on the screen. There are two options available in the binoculars with an LCD screen. These options are a screen that flips open or a simple flat screen. The flat screen sets are less expensive, but most owners say they prefer the flip screen for quality.

When using the pair of digital binoculars to take pictures, there are times that portions of the image will look somewhat different than the way the person saw it due to distance, timing, or lighting. There is digital imaging software available that can help the photographer perfect the image to match the view exactly.

Although digital binoculars are very handy and functional for a number of purposes, the owner should not automatically get rid of any other cameras. The quality of photographs taken with the digital binoculars is still being perfected and at the current time is not as good as images taken with regular household cameras.
