Multiple storage devices are a good idea so you can have one inserted in the camera and carry additional ones in case space is needed.
So are all digital storage devices the same? Is cost the only consideration you should consider?
One thing to keep in mind is that although there are many manufactures selling Digital Flash/Storage they are not all selling the same products.
You will want to purchase from one of the major players in the flash arena, companies like SanDisk or Lexar.
They use high-end flash devices from companies like Toshiba and Samsung, the two main suppliers of Nand Flash. They are also insured to be compatible with the Digital Camera you are purchasing. If your images are important to you storage is not the time to buy generic or unknown brand.
Sub-standard flash devices will only provide inferior images or fail altogether. The lower cost is not worth the inconvenience and headache they cause.
While the average digital camera purchaser and subsequent digital camera storage devicepurchaser will ever have the desire or need to contact the manufacturer it is important to know that if a need arises there are customer support representatives available.
Again, a reputable company will be a supportive company.
Secure Digital (SD) Cards have been in the market for around 10 years. Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Cards are the advanced version made for the need of higher capacities as well as faster data transfer rate in digital cameras and other such devices.
SD card capacities range from 8MB to 4GB of memory. New specifications allow SDHC cards to achieve capacities of 4GB - 32GB. In addition to higher capacities, SDHC cards also offer a substantial performance advantage over SD cards in speed class ratings allowing quicker data transfer. The increasing demand for high-capacity memory comes partially from the high-resolution digital camera now available.
So what are the differences between the SD and SDHC cards?
Both cards share the same physical attributes. SD cards are compatible with both SD and SDHC enhanced devices. SDHC cards, however, are compatible only with SDHC enhanced devices. In order for your SDHC card to function, you must have it inserted into an SDHC compatible device. To ensure that your device is compatible it must have the SDHC logo on the packaging.
When calculating your digital camera price make sure you include some additional money for storage. You will be taking some great images with that new Canon Digital Camera or Nikon Digital Camera that you won't want to lose.
