Residents that migrated west in Conestoga Wagons have Lancaster County to thank, as the wagons were manufactured here, as was the Kentucky Rifle, which made for many a widow in the Old West. Popular attractions for tourists include walking tours of the city's historical district, and the lovely gardens which are cultivated in the area. The Central Market located in the heart of the city is the country's longest running farmer's market.

During the Civil War, Lancaster County was a stop on the famous "underground railroad", which allowed many slaves to escape to freedom in the north. The country-side of Lancaster County is covered with rolling hills, with colors of blooming grain, corn, and wheat decorating the landscape. The county is home to many charming small towns featuring antique shops, picturesque covered bridges, and road side markets selling goods fresh from the farm. You'll find friendly locals in towns such as White Horse, Martindale, Bird-in-Hand, and Churchtown who can guide you to lovely scenery and historical spots which dot the area.
