Dinner Party Seating Arrangement Ideas

Seating arrangements for a dinner party can get pretty complicated when you start incorporating the in-laws and other family members into the mix. Face it, grandma doesn't want to sit next to Uncle Paul from your hubby's family and your mom doesn't want to be placed next to Uncle Sal...but where does this leave you when it comes to dinner party seating arrangements? There are only so many tables and you can't afford to make the wrong choice.

For large dinner parties that incorporate both the husband's and the wife's family it is best to try to create a seating arrangement that will place similar guests together. For instance, you may place the kids next to each other or at their own table. Teenagers of course will be more comfortable with their own space and not right next to their parents usually. For the adults, try sitting adults together in accordance with their ages as well. This will likely give everyone someone they can relate with close by.

Small dinner parties warrant the use of creative seating arrangements. Try pairing all the men together on one side of the table and the women on the other. Another great option that you have will smaller sized dinner parties is to choose a seating arrangement that rotates man, woman, man, woman. You also might want to try two tables--one for the girls and one for the guys!

Try pairing relatives who perform similar work tasks together to increase conversation. If there are not any relating family members in you and your spouses family, then you may want to pair opposites together for the seating arrangements. Opposites attract and this may be the best option that you have when it comes to family and friend seating. If you find yourself left with no other choice in the seating arrangements for the dinner party that you have coming up...opposites attract is a great choice that almost always works!

Another great choice for dinner party seating arrangements is pairing moms and dads with moms and dads, uncles with uncles and grandmas with grandmas. Together, a great grandma paired with a great grandma will be able to relate and they will be able to find something to talk about rather than if the people didn't have anything in common.

It also works well to place familiar people with less familiar people. For instance, for a bridal party or a wedding party, you may try seating one or two people that know everything about the happy couple with a group that may be less familiar such as work buddies or less close friends. This will give the work friends plenty of opportunity to ask questions and the few people such as close family or friends at the table will have plenty to talk about with funny stories and answers to pressing questions!

No matter which seating arrangement you choose for a dinner party, the guests will surely have a wonderful time. Do not over stress the seating arrangement. In fact, if you are that worried about it, you can always leave the seating arrangements open for the guests to determine. Have one main table that is for particular family and leave the rest of the seating open so that guests can make their own decisions about where to sit. This way, there won't be any apprehensions or upset guests that were sat next to the wrong person by you!
