Dinner for Schmucks Movie Review

Derek Odom
Okay, fans of the uncomfortable, belly up to the bar. Drinks are on me. This movie fits the "uncomfortable" bill, and then some. It's literally 114-minutes of awkward moments, topped off with witty sarcasm. In short, it's a great movie if you like "The Office" or other sitcoms like it. A real work of art.

Steve Carell does an absolutely, mind-bogglingly astounding job of making us feel uncomfortable, and Dinner for Schmucks is no exception. The movie is absolutely hilarious, if not totally and completely stupid. Yea, just the way we like 'em!

Steve plays Barry, a taxidermist who has taken on the odd hobby of dressing up road-kill as art. He meets up with Tim, played by Josh Rudd, quite by accident one day, and hilarity ensues. The two of them together make a perfect odd couple and did exemplary jobs in this must-see comedy.

Tim is a business man trying to get ahead in the world, and Barry is a small-time thinker who tries to make himself happy by immersing himself in the taxidermy hobby after his wife left him for his boss. Already we are on the weird train headed for Wackoville, but the movie gets even better.

Tim's promotion at work hinges on him bringing a fantastically flawed "talent" to a company dinner. The idea is literally to see which partner can bring in the worst act, all of whom think they are doing a great job. They refer to it as a dinner for idiots, but schmucks works just as well.

Tim talks Barry into attending with his oddly portrayed dead things, and through a huge number of mishaps along the way, they end up becoming friends. While the movie is somewhat predictable, it isn't exactly meant to be a murder-mystery. It delivers, and it delivers well. Four-and-a-half of five stars on the comedy rating. Truly a guffaw-inducing flick.
