DINOSAURS INVADE MYRTLE BEACH, S.C

Largest Known Dinosaur Sand Sculpture Will Roar into Town May 17

They're saying it will be the largest sand sculpture of a dinosaur ever constructed.

It will certainly be the largest for Team Sandtastic, a group of professional sand sculptors out of Florida who have built sand sculptures all over the world. The internationally-known team is flying into Myrtle Beach, S. C. specifically to build the massive sculpture this May.

The dino sculpture is being built in celebration of the opening of the IMAX 3D Theatre at Broadway At The Beach which will debut Dinosaurs 3D: Giants Of Patagonia, narrated by Hollywood legend Donald Sutherland on May 22. Carved from 200,000 pounds of sand, the sculpture will depict two of the largest creatures that ever lived - the ferocious-looking bipedal carnivore Giganotosaurus and the largest living animal to ever roam the Earth, the plant-eating Argentinosaurus. Both dinos are front and center in the film, one of five "totally-immersive," state-of-the-art 3D movies that will be showing at the IMAX 3D Theatre.

Team Sandtastic calls construction of the sculpture "performance art" and the public is expected to turn out in droves to watch the sculptors work.

If you go, you'll see the IMAX 3D "Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia" sand sculpture built over May 17 through 21. When finished, it will be approximately 15 feet high and 30 feet wide.

Amazingly, only sand and a small amount of water will be used to make the sculpture; no cement or other fixatives are mixed in with the sand. The sculptors use common tools found in most garages and kitchens, such as margin trowels, spreaders, cake decorator spatulas, and dental instruments for etching fine details into the sand.

The IMAX 3D sculpture is a one-of-a-kind project. Team Sandtastic never creates the exact same sculpture twice. So don't miss this once in a lifetime chance to see dinosaurs invade Myrtle Beach.
