The opportunity they offer is just that: an opportunity. It's not a guarantee. Others can teach how they did it and they can help others do it, but just because some fail does not mean they were misled.
Most conventional businesses out there today in the business world are pyramid schemes. There is someone at the top making more than the levels under them. Only they probably are not in a position to benefit from the success of those under them. In the situations I've observed, companies tried to keep employees well-trained enough that they could earn money for the company, but not so well-trained that employees would be entitled to higher pay or feel compelled to look for higher compensation elsewhere.
In direct sales, this is different. Those above you benefit when you succeed, so they will encourage and reward your growth. They will never be in a position to suffer from your success, so your advancement will never be impeded. So direct sales are actally less "shady" than your typical work arrangement.
In looking for the right direct sales opportunity, it is best to look for one in which the startup is free or very inexpensive. It isn't smart to invest money in starting with the intention that you will "earn it all back right away". Such a situation is too much of a gamble.
Direct sales can be an excellent sideline income. When pursued in addition to a full-time job, it can be used to pay down debt and add to a family's household income. A common complaint from people is "you just can't get good customer service anymore". Direct sellers are likely to provide excellent customer service, since they depend on repeat business and handle customers with this in mind.
Many direct selling companies donate generously to charity. Examples of charities donated to include the American Cancer Society and the Ronald McDonald House.
When you purchase from a direct sales company, you know that you are giving your money to a company that enables people to operate their own businesses, build their self-worth, and support their families. With the heightened awareness of how companies treat their employees, it is wise to look at direct sales as something that adds value to the lives of customers and small business people.
