Director James Cameron to Debunk Christianity Monday?

Jeanne Sparks-Carreker
ISRAEL-Director James Cameron has plans to break news Monday about an archaeological dig in Jerusalem about 25 years ago that apparently unearthed the body of Jesus Christ and his earthly parents. The reason it took 25 years for him to speak up? It took time to translate the names on the primitive caskets.

Israeli construction workers were digging the foundation for a new building in the industrial park in Talpiyot, Jerusalem. Time Magazine reports that when the dirt gave way, it revealed "a 2,000 year old cave with 10 stone caskets. Archaeologists were summoned and the stone caskets carted away for examination. It took 20 years for experts to decipher the names on the ten tombs. They were: Jesua, son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Mathew, Jofa and Judah, son of Jesua."

Cameron contends they have collected real evidence through DNA tests, archeological evidence, and Biblical studies that the ten coffins belonged to Jesus and his family.

The famous director is holding a press conference on Monday in New York, at which time he will reveal three coffins, supposedly those of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene. He also says he can prove that Mary Magdalene and Jesus were married, as well as had a daughter.

News about the film, which will be shown soon on the Discovery Channel, has been a hot blog topic throughout the Middle East.

Time magazine speculates Cameron's press conference and Discovery Channel documentary will "outrage Christians and stir up a titanic debate between believers and skeptics."

One thing is for certain: news that it took these translators 25 years to do their work surely will cause a decline in their business, since the languages of Christ's time are known, studied, translated, and still spoken today. It will be interesting as well to hear what Mr. Cameron compared DNA samples to in order to decide that one of the bodies belongs to the resurrected God of Judeo Christian doctrine.

I don't see how this would "debunk" Christianity... Jesus' body did not go to heaven I do not believe, only his soul. So this discovery shows nothing against His Resurrection in my opinion. If anything, this discovery proves that Jesus was real indeed.

Neat write Ms Jeanne! For me it is a matter of faith. If I were to give it in recognition of that truth which lead me to it and then discard it simply because somebody shows me something that would say more about my flakiness than it does about whether or not all those prayers have been answered or not. And, yeah...I already know that this does not make sense and that I sound drunk, etc, etc, etc. Fact is, Hollywood does not honesty make. Hollywood serves one thing. Hollywood. To follow people who make a living in pretend and make believe...I don't need to say a lot more...and yes, I know, it does not make any sense.

Yes, it's funny how a report of some movie director is all it takes for people to believe. It's a good thing James Cameron isn't a cult leader--some of you would be in trouble!

Very interesting article. I'll hold off any judgements until I see what kind of materials are presented. Like others here, I also find it a little odd that it took them 25 years to decipher the coffin inscriptions, but perhaps the carvings were faded or something like that. I'm not sure that anything will ever be conclusively proven or disproven as far as Jesus' humanity because people are going to believe whatever they believed before. This reminds me of an interesting book I read in high school called The Body, in which a priest and archeologist are hired to find out if a certain tomb and mummy belonged to Jesus. A few years ago, they tried to do a movie about the book, but I never saw it.

Fascinating stuff! Although with all the researchers and historians in the world -- they need James Cameron to give this credibility??

My previous comment was partially in response to George Meluch, several comments down. Sorry I neglected to mention that -- I forgot that the newer comments appear at the top and expected to have mine posted just below his!

Logic and proof do and should matter to the faithful, but I wouldn't consider this type of discovery conclusive proof. How can we be sure it's the same Jesus, Mary, and Joseph? (They were -- and still are -- fairly common names.) And what kind of DNA tests would prove that it was them? (I may be wrong, but I thought you'd need existing DNA to compare against -- has the bloodline been traced to someone alive today?) Those are just some thoughts off the top of my head; I believe that someone better educated in this area than I am would be able to disprove Cameron's claim fairly easily.

Sugessted reading; "Bloodline of the Holy Grail" by Laurence Gardner. It is not new news that Jesus was human, and was married. It is substantial and astounding if the bodies really were found though. I will be researching this topic more. Thank you for the informative article.
