Dirt Cheap Gifts for Gardeners

Gifts for Gardeners that Fit Any Budget

Tricia Goss
As you look over your holiday shopping list, you think about the tastes, wishes and hobbies of all the special people in your life. You want to give them gifts that show your care and consideration, even though your budget may be a bit on the tight side. These affordable gifts for gardeners will help you cross off the aspiring horticulturist on your list.

Cute or Stylish Plant Markers

A gift that practically all gardeners will use and enjoy is a set of plant markers. If you are the crafty type, you can create a homemade set of plant markers with nothing more than a hammer, a steel letter stamping kit and some old teaspoons or tablespoons. Stamp the names of herbs, flowers or vegetables into the bowls of the spoons by tapping the letter stamps with a hammer.

If you would rather shop for a gift than handcraft one, look for some unique plant markers that your favorite gardener will adore, such as any of the offerings made by the skilled artisans at Etsy.com.

Sun Protection

Give your favorite gardener gifts that show you care and want her to be around for a very long time. A wide brimmed hat and a gift basket loaded with sunscreen, lip balm and a reusable water bottle will speak volumes.

Gardening Seat

Gardeners spend too much time kneeling in the dirt, earning aching backs and painful knees. Gifts that allow gardeners to still enjoy getting down and dirty minus the aches and pains will surely be well received. Look for compact gardening seats that fold up and are lightweight. This gardening seat even sports a removable tool bag and costs less than $25.

Unique Planters

Scour thrift stores, yard sales and discount retailers for attractive and unusual planters and pots. If something that is not a planter catches your eye or suits your favorite gardener's style, consider how it might be made into one. For example, you could cut out the center of a doll chair with a hole saw and insert an inexpensive pot into it.

Gift of Time

Perhaps the most thoughtful gift for gardeners is time spent laboring side by side with someone special: you! Print up a gift certificate on your computer for an hour, an afternoon or a whole weekend spent working together in the garden. This gift will cost nothing more than a little ink and paper, some of your spare time and bunches of love.
