The obvious plot of this movie, however, revolves around the romance between Babe and Johnny in the summer of 1963. Babe (Jennifer Grey), who is a daddy's girl, plans to save the world one country at a time by helping the all of the starving nations. But while vacationing in a ritzy, upper class vacation resort she meets a simple dance instructor. Johnny (Patrick Swayze) is a man that works season to season, along with his dance partner and other followers, as a dance instructor and entertainer. Babe meets him one night while helping an employee of the resort by going into an area that was off limits to the guests. She watches as the dancer's dirty dance, and then Johnny drags her onto the dance floor to show her what this type of dancing was all about.
After Johnny's dance partner finds out that she is pregnant and schedules an abortion, Babe offers to help out by taking her place in a required dance show. Throughout the teaching stage, even though Johnny is at first annoyed by her lack of dancing ability, slowly falls in love with her. Babe continues to fall for him and ends up isolating herself from her family when she tells the owner of the resort that she had spend the night with Johnny in an attempt to give Johnny an alibi for a missing wallet. Because of Babe's confession, Johnny is not charged with stealing the wallet and an old couple was found to have been stealing from various locations throughout the summer. Johnny was fired, though, because he was having a relationship with a guest.
Johnny leaves quietly at first, but then realizes that his love for Babe can not be thrown away that easily. He goes back, interrupts the closing ceremony for the summer, and dances with Babe one more time. The final scene shows the entire cast dancing and having a great time as the movie ends, and Johnny and Babe are once again together.
This movie is well written, has great choreography, and has an underlining plot that is an important issue within our society. This 96 minute 1980's movie is also full of great acting and amazing music. Overall, this is a great movie and is a must see for everybody.
