Cons and disadvantages of a front load washing machine
Price
The cost for a high efficiency front load washing machine can run 300 to 500 bucks higher than a traditional washer. This extra cost definitely falls under cons and disadvantages. I have owned two different front load brands and found that they do not last any longer for the additional cost.
Design
Bending so far over to add and remove laundry can be an issue for many. Most models have a pedestal that can be purchased for an additional price. However, this extra cost only adds to the already fat bottom line.
Adding to a laundry load is not as simple with a front load washer. In order to add forgotten laundry the machine must first be stopped. If the tub has started to fill, it will have to drain before the front loading door will open. This process adds to the already longer cycle times for this type of washing machine.
Front load washing machines have a powerful spin cycle. This is important if the machine is placed in a location where intense vibrations could be distracting.
Parents who have small children need to be on alert with a front load washing machine. Kids love to find small places to hide, and the front load design of these tubs seem like the perfect clubhouse.
Detergent
A front load washing machine uses less water and requires HE or high efficiency detergent. These detergents cost more, which is why they fall under cons and disadvantages. It is important not to skimp and try to use regular detergent. The extra suds from regular detergent can cause damage to a front load machine and leave residue that can result in unhealthy mold and mildew.
Mold and Mildew
This is a big complaint with a front load washing machine, and for many, one of the biggest cons and disadvantages of ownership. Small amounts of water can be left in a front load washer after a completed cycle. This can mean mold and smelly mildew if you do not take the time to dry it out, especially in warmer months.
Liquid fabric softener can also cause mold or mildew in a front load washer. Because these machines use less water, many times they do not wash away the residue left behind by liquid fabric softener. This residue can cause a soured mildew odor that will transfer to clothes and all washables.
Before making a decision to buy a front load washing machine, do ample research. Be sure to ask questions at the store concerning cons and disadvantages for the machine under consideration. Many times sales people have heard complaints about a washer that you may not have considered. It is always best to find any disadvantages or cons before making a costly commitment you may later grow to regret.

Post a CommentLet's go over these "cons" you've listed
Price: Yes they cost more initially, but you end up saving on your bills in the long run.
Design: well, we're already bending down to put the clothes in the dryer, so this puts you at the same level. I'd much rather be able to bend down with my knees to get the clothes out, then have to bend myself in half getting those last few socks out of the bottom of a front loading machine.
Just make sure you have all your clothes in the machine before it starts, pretty simple.
Granted, yes, parents of small children should be careful about them climbing in, you've got that one.
Detergent: it costs more initially, but you use way less, so you're actually saving money.
Mold and mildew: My top loading washing machine always has water left in it after a cycle, and I've seen plenty of top loading washers in my time that have mold and mildew in it.
So don't let this scare you off of buying a front loading

Thanks for the information on front loading washers, you just saved me a lot of aggravation for the next few years.
Information was to the point and helpful.
Good luck and best wishes.
Cindy: Yes I think that many may drip a tiny bit in this manner. When you are finished with your laundry try taking a paper towel and giving the door a quick wipe to get rid of any remaining water. Giving your frontloader a quick wipe down to get rid of the residual water might also help ensure you do not develop a mildew issue down the road too.
Have you had a problem with water dripping on the floor when the door is opened? I just purchased a Frigidaire front load washing machine and when the door is opened about a teaspoon of water drips down the front of the machine onto the floor. I have been told by Lowes and Frigidaire that this is normal. Comments?
Good points

Great information on front loading washing machines! While they use less electricity, the high price and problems with mold make spending the extra money hard. Hopefully, new designs will help eliminate these problems.
very good info, nice work as always friend.
